I had the same problem. You can buy the top part of the shift and can be replace by removing the pin that hold the two pieces together. I paid like $35.00 for it.

I have 2001 Monte Carlo that was running fine last week. I had to replace the water pump and intake gasket this week. Now when u first drive it. It shifts really hard out of first gear. It shifts fine...

Check and see if there is not a vacuum hose dislodged, the vacuum modulator may not be getting enough vacuum and causing the "hard shift" condition.

Sounds like the Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid is bad. Have you had it scanned for codes? See if a code is stored in the PCM for Maximum adapt and long shift

I have a 2001 chev monte carlo that has been sitting for about 2 years because of a heating problem i had about 85,ooo miles on it my husband took it to the repair shop to get an estimate to get it fixed...

If no repair was performed, the thermostat may have been stuck closed, but repaired itself by repeated heating and cooling??? Usually, most problems like this do not self repair.

You need to rebuild the transmission,it's over heating. May want to check your transmission cooler first .
