What are some of the problems that causes the check engine light and the abs light to come on.

I have a 2002 Sport Trac that the ABS light comes on occasionally and then goes off and works fine for several days. Could this be just a rust buildup or loose wire etc. or something much worse?

Thanks for any insite anyone may have.

Your vehicle is fitted with an engine management system this is there to recognise any fault that accurse with in the engine or electric’s. As components start to wear or electric fitting become dry or corroded or filters become blocked. the management system will pick up on them. The fact that the light is only intermittent is usually a sign that a complete failure is imminent. This cold be something as simple as blocked air filter, by having a service with air and oil filter renewed should eliminate the problem.
As for the ABS light coming on this is an indication that one or more of your wheel sensors is failing. a wheel sensor is there to read the speed of each wheel so that if one or more wheels is going faster than the others say like in a skid then the anti lock breaking system will activate. The cost to have a wheel sensor replaced is around £260. Hope this helps,

Abs light can come on when rust builds up on contact rotor under rotor assemnbly closest to hub assembly. Then looks like a ring with a series of teeth that run in in a complete circle like a rotor. There is an electronic eye that makes and breakscontact depentdant on whether a tooth is present or not. This is what determines whether the wheel is turning or not.

Check engine light can come on when any fluids are low -check all, also check gas cap. Sounds stupid but if there is no pressure in fuel cell then the vapours cannot be picked up by pollution system.
Dirty oil can also cause problems as the pick up sensor on crank shaft can be missed by computer- the only has to happen once to get an error light. Disconnect battery to reset computer-this will erase errors.See if it happens again.

oxygen sensorscan do this as well- try these and repost- I will follow up

Hope this helps

Wayne, I would start with the brake wheel sensors, most likely the front end- I would start there first.
Has this vehicle had brake pads replaced, or had recent brake work? If so, what was done, and by who? (home job, or brake shop?)

I need to reset the check engine like on my 2003 ford sport trac

All you need to do is turn of your engine, disconnect the postive and negative wire from the battery, leave it like that for half and hour or so until the ECU reset itself. Connect and turn on, check engine light should go off. If it comes back on, you have a issue, a sensor is detecting a malfuction somewhere and you will need to get a code for it or take it to the shop to see what the check engine light is coming on for.

P2195 CODE ON 2003 FORD EXPLORER SPORT TRAC 4.O SOHC. I CHANGED OUT ALL THREE OXYGEN SENSORS, AS ADVISED, AND STILL COMING UP WITH P0171, P0174, AND NOW P2195. HAVE ALSO CHECKED ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS,...

Hello,
Very common concern with the Explorer, Explorer Sport Trac and Ranger with the 4.0l SOHC engine! The upper and lower intake manifold gaskets fail, causing vacuum leaks..It can be Extremely difficult to detect these leaks, because they only leak intermittently (usually in the AM after a cold soak)... As the engine warms up they seal back up! Sometimes the vehicle will idle rough, surge or stall after initial start up, then the symptoms will clear after it gets to operating temperature... Usually there will be no driveability symptoms at all, except the engine light coming on and setting lean codes.. The gaskets have been redesigned to correct this concern..
