Thanks for the help. I don't really know what I am looking for. Is there a sticker or is it imprinted in the plastic case the tools are housed in?
The only thing I found was a sticker on the back of the cover that had the year of the car and maybe a part number to reorder that piece.
Would I have to take out the emergency tool kit to find the number?
On one car ther is a sticker on the side of the inside of the tool kit. on the other it is writen in texter maybe by the dealer but it is also inside of the tool kit on the side, i have to put my head right in there to see. i dont have any other answers for you. thx

in this case you need ot contact the dealership and ask them since it is dependent on the VIN#. Also if you have ALL the information from when you purchased the car, the owners manual may have it written down in it somewhere, but it will not be printed, it will be hand written. Its a 4 digit number.
Normally the dealer just needs to know the serial and it will give you the code in less than a minute. If the code they gave you doesn't work then the radio unit has been modified and the only ones that know what was modified are the ones that did it.
Just bite the bullet and get a new radio - one with an iPod hookup , your wife will appreciate that.
most new BMW's the fuse block is located behind the glove box. There should be a pair of twist plastic fastners at the back of the glove box, twist and remove the plate and you should find the fuse box and fuse locater list.
If the radio is displaying code wait, or wait, then the ignition and radio must remain on for 1hour. I would contact a dealer within the USA and provide them with your radio serial number. The serial number can be displayed in the radio by pressing and holding down the "M" button while turning on the ignition.
Enter the 5-digit Radio Code using the radios station preset buttons. After entering the fifth digit press the > button and the radio will activate. Any presets you had before the power loss will return. Apparently a capacitor in the radio holds that information
