Question about 1998 Buick Century

1 Answer

Fuel issues? I'm puzzled because I've been told so many different things. It started out not wanting to crank right away but it would try to turn over and once I gave it a little gas it would turn over. Once it started running it would do fine.We replaced the fuel filter and it didn't help. We thought it might be the fuel pump so we took it to a local mechanic and he said the pump was fine. He did a tune up on it and said there was a build up in the throttle body and he cleaned it. We have ran 2 tanks of injector cleaner in it but it gets worse and worse. Now it wants to shut off when you slow down or stop. HELP!

I would take it to another mechanic it sounds like a bad fuel pump since it is fuel injected take the pump off but leave the intake hose on then turn it over and see if it pumps out gas

My 2005 dodge stratus set for about a month and a half without periodically starting it. I'm ready to start driving it again and it wont start. It has wants to start and will turn over but wont

Are you mechanically inclined?
Here are a couple things to try:
1. Turn the key to ON (don't crank the engine
then OFF and back ON - several times.
this will pulse the fuel pump several times to charge the fuel rail.
then try to start.
2. If it doesn't catch/start right away - hold the throttle to the floor while cranking. This will put the Computer in "Start Flooded Engine" mode and turn OFF the fuel injectors.
If those things don't work - some serious diagnostics will be in order - let me know how this works :)

You are describing two different problems but I think I understand that the vehicle cranks over, tries to start but stalls right away (your last sentence "vehicle not cranking" suggests that there is an issue with the starter or the battery is dead).

Without question the first thing I would do is check fuel pressure. If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge lift up the drivers rear seat, pull back the carpet, remove the access panel. You are now looking at the top of the fuel pump. When you try to start the vehicle can you hear/feel it running? If not than its probably no good.

Fuel pumps are pretty common on theses.

Having trouble with starting. most times is starts

Problem most likely won't go away, and it could strand you and cost a lot more to have towed.

The fuel pump can be tested by a competent mechanic.

Don't throw parts @ it hoping to fix it. Google your issue and do some research, you may find the answer online.

Car cranks but willl not start and has plenty of gas

can only say is to check the power at the fuel pump to see if it is getting power. it is the gray wire.voltage should be there when cranking. and stop when not cranking. if this is the case, then the fuel pump is bad. if not then the fuel pump relay may be bad.

Long Crank times before starting

Sounds like it could be losing fuel pressure to the rail, try turning ignition on for 10s, then off then on then off then try start. That should make sure the pump has pressurised so will see if it is pressure.
