Hi,

Why do you want to replace the charcoal purge canister? Are you smelling fuel vapor under the hood?

On a 1986 (this is posted on the 1986 forum), it is held on by a screw (possibly a rivet).

In my opinion, I'd leave the vapor canister alone. If you really want to spend $50 on something, buy new seat covers.

On my 1987, the valve is vacuum controlled. It is under the alternator. I replaced mine after an alternator fire melted it, hence how I knew it was under the alternator.

Yours is behind the headlight? Can you actually see it?

    To locate yours:

    * Check if the purge valve is connected directly to the canister. The valve will be connected with a bolt or rivet if it is on the canister.

    * If the valve is not on the canister, then trace back the hoses/pipes to sources. There should be two hoses on the canister. One hose goes to the gas tank (might be a pipe), the other (likely a hose) goes to the canister purge valve.

I searched for the 1997 device, and I found a few different items for your car. One is electronic, the other is vacuum controlled.

Trying to locate canister purge valve solenoid on vehicle

There is a canister purge valve & a volume control purge valve on your truck. The canister purge valve is on the evap. canister itself(at the rear of veh. near the fuel tank. The volume control purge valve is located in the eng. compartment, passenger side behind Battery. You didn't mention if it's a 4 or 6 cyl.

1996 pontiac firebird 5.7 liter engine light on po1441

Two choice dudes code there...

DTC P0441 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
EVAP emission canister purge is contolled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.
With a P0441 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Common Chrysler fix - Replace Leak Detection Pump / LDP
  • Repair damaged EVAP lines or canister
  • Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Repair open in PCM purge command circuit
  • Replace purge Solenoid
  • Replace vacuum switch
  • Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or soleniod
  • Repair resistance in purge connector
  • Replace PCM

DTC P1441 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Flow During Non-Purge.
M
ost generally caused by a purge valve stuck open. the only way to diag for sure is with a gm tech 2 scan tool and a smoke machine. but if dont mind spending a few bucks as a good quess. Replace the purge valve.

Hope this helps.

Mustang GT 4.6 EVAP Canister Purge Valve Location?

You will need to remove the right front wheel & wheel well liner. The canister purge valve is behind the cover. It should have two tube going into the bottom and one on the side near the top.
You can fix it!

Check Engine Light

Ok i have the same make and model car.And had same problem but i was only needing new hoses. thwe code reader will not tell you if they are bad you just have to check this. The purge valve and canister is located under hood on passenger side behind bumper. look behind the light through the openings. You have to raise car up and do the repairs from under the bottom of the bumper. On passenger side under hood above the wheel fender and between the engine you will see a emmision line about the size of a pencil leads to the purge valve. the valve cost about $18.00 and canister cost around $75.00 at auto zone. The canister is the square box and sometimes you can take apart and clean it and put back together and it should work fine.
