Question about 1996 Ford Escort 4 Door

1 Answer

1996 Ford Escort 1.9L hatchback engine cranks but doesn't start.

Engine cranks normally, but no fire. Fuel system is apparently intact and normal. I was driving at 65 MPH and lost fire. Coil pack is known to be good: replaced crank sensor, still no fire. Need to locate EEC relay and EDIS Mod. Haynes says Ignition Module is integrated w/ PCM: is this true? Can You help?

P0340 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit Malfunction ,did you check the wiring ?
P0340 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit Malfunction The test fails when the PCM can no longer detect the signal from the CMP sensor.

Will the engine start? Yes No GO to DR2 . DTC P0340 is not the cause of the No Start. GO to Section 3 to diagnose the No Start symptom. Is the PCM firing the injectors ?
  • Starting Concerns:
    • No Start, Normal Crank
Note: Extended cranking because of a no start can load the exhaust system with raw fuel, damaging the catalytic converter after the engine starts. For applications with Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Systems, perform the following after the no start has been repaired: Disconnect the electric secondary air injection (AIR) solid state relay, run the engine until the surplus fuel is used up, and reconnect the relay (disconnecting the relay may set a Continuous Memory PCM DTC that will need to be cleared).

Fired then stopped.will not start again even with a boost.

Cars need three things to run:
Spark
Compression
Fuel

All of these have to happen at the right time. If the engine is rotating normally during cranking, spray some starter fluid into the intake to see if the engine will run on the fluid. If not, then do a spark test. Spark testers are cheap and can be found at part stores. If the car has spark, then do a compression test. If compression is low on all cylinders then you probably need a timing belt. If compression is normal and you have spark, then you have a fuel issue and probably need a fuel pump. If you have no spark, check all of the fuses under the hood and inside the car.

Have you checked the timing belt?

Ford 1.9 liter ran for 10 min, with no oil now it wont start

If the oil light is going off, then the computer should be telling the engine to run, turning the fuel pump on & the ignition on so you need to crank it & make sure that is happening.

If not, then you'll need to isolate the reason for no ignition first.

You need to check your timing belt now & verify the timing is within the specs & the belt is still intact, possibly the belt jumped/slipped with the excessive drag caused by no oil.

I don't know how hot the car got so you'll need to consider if anything melted, wires, lines & such that would cause the sensors to have problems keeping the ignition from working.

If you do get fire & fuel, you can put about a tablespoon of motor oil down the cylinders wth the plugs removed & crank the engine several revolutions to get the rings lubricated again, then reinstall the spark plugs. This will also provide better compression enabling the engine to start more readily.

good luck

Engine won't crank or seem to get power on key turn.

More than likely, your starter has gone out. If the battery is fully charged and its not even turning over, that is what i would start with.

1998 ford escort won't start; engine won't fire up?

CHECK FOR THE FUEL STRAINER/FILTER! could have been clogged.
check for blockage at the air intake.
check for battery voltage and current, insufficient starting speed makes less compression and makes ignition very difficult!
due to several ignition attempts battery might have discharged a lot! you may have it checked for its voltage and acidity level

presence of water on the fuel can also cause your problem! it prevents the fuel to ignite at the cylinder.

2000 ford escort want start. starter turns over battery is charged fluids are full ,tried to jump start tried the fuses. made sure all wires are conneced. what now

Go back to the basics. Fuel, air, spark and timing. First off the battery has to be above 12 volts to diagnos properly. If the engine cranks over fast and stays cranking, then the battery should be ok for testing. Need to check for fuel pressure at the injector rail, normally 35 to 50 psi. If no fuel pressure, suspect fuel problem, filter , pump, electrical. Check for plugged air filter or restriction in air intake system. Also recommend a compression test , will tell you condition of the piston rings, valve seats and seal and timing of the camshaft. Last is to check for spark at the spark plug to determine an ignition problem. Once you have narrowed down the problem, it will be easier to fix.

Fuel cut off switch for 1990/91 ford escort 1.9

The "inertia switch" which shuts off fuel to the engine in the event of a collision or jolt on a 1991 through 1996 models, as well as on 1998 coupes, is located in the rear of the vehicle, near the right (passenger's side) strut tower. On sedan and coupe models, open the trunk and remove the right-sided trim panel. On sedan and coupe models, open the trunk and remove the right-side trim panel. On hatchback and wagon models, there may be an access door secured by clips. On some models you may need to remove the lower quarter trim panel on the right side, however it is easier to cut an access hole directly above the switch.

Replace the crank sensor on your car. The crank sensor tells when the plugs should fire. When it decides to go bad, the cylinders will overly fuel themselves because it's not firing at the right time creating your fuel smell.
