Question about 1999 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

Guages or HVAC Controls don't light up

My 99 Sonoma's gauges work fine but quit lighting up at night. Same for the HVAC panel under the stereo. I checked the fuses and all was fine. I'm stumped. Please help.

Good Day,

Sounds to me like your headlight switch needs to be replaced. When you turn your light's on (parking or headlights) the switch sends two outputs, one to the exterior lights and the other output is your cluster and hvac illuminaton. You can get a new switch from a dealer for around 30 bucks new. Here's a pic of what you need:

You do need to remove your outer dash panel to gain access.

Sorry this posting is so short, just worked a 14hr day. If you need further help with replacing the switch I can walk you though the process.

Hope this helps for now.

My gauges in the instrument panel are not working: speedometer, tachometer , fuel gauge etc.

If all the guages quit working at the same time, then it is probably a blown fuse. Check your fuse panels in the dash or under the hood. Look for a fuse that is labeled instrument panel or guages, it is probably blown.

1. At night there is zero illumination for temp control knobs. It's completely dark. 2. Dash gauges very difficult to read at dusk and night time. (windows are tinted dark) by previous owner. doesn't go...

The HVAC control, if it is the Electronic version, you might want to try unplugging, and plugging it back in. Remove the center trim panel by opening the ash tray, and pulling on each corner. The trim panel is held on with 6 spring clips ( 3 on each side ).
When you have the panel loose ( don't move too far, the HVAC controls and the Passenger Airbga Deactivated light are still hooked up ), un hook the 2 cam over connectors ( circled in blue ). After hooking back up, the HVAC will be off, you need to manually turn it on.
2. The dash lights could be the wrong bulb, or some could be blown out. -> Technical Articles section has a thread on removing the dash to change the bulbs.

These are the 2 starting points.

Guages in 85 s-10,don't work with lights on.What's the cause?

Electrical gremlins are wierd. My guess is there is a ground unconnected. There is the main ground from the battery to the motor and probably a pigtail ground the the body.

Did you mess with anything under the dash?

Gauges Do Not Light Up

If it is a fuse you should be able to pull them one by one and look to see if the wire between the post is broken.
