    I got a hold of Chilton's book from my buddy Bruce, who also has an Aspire. It is just by: remove air conditioning belt ( to see timing marks on crankshaft pulley) having all the accessories turned off, have car up to running temp., hook up light to #1 spark plug wire, have car in neutral, compare the timing marks to the indicator sticking out from crankshaft pulley cover (proper timing is indicated by the line to the left (called the yellow line) matches up with the indicator). If it doesn't line up, loosen both distributor hold down bolts and adjust.

Please rate as fixya if this helps. Ignition Timing Check and adjust the ignition timing using the following procedure:

  1. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to normal operating temperature.
  1. Shut off all of the accessories.
  1. Connect Rotunda Timing Analyzer 164-R0257 or equivalent.
  1. Using a jumper, ground the self-test input (STI) terminal at the data link connector (DLC).

  1. Check the base ignition timing. The yellow ignition timing mark should line up with the pointer on the timing belt cover.


  1. If the timing marks do not line up, continue with the following steps.
  1. Loosen the distributor bolts.
  1. Rotate the distributor (12127) until the timing mafor 1.3 1994 ford aspire, the timing and procedure - ea7825c.gifperly aligned.


  1. Tighten the distributor bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-19 lb-ft).
  1. Check the timing marks to ensure they did not move when the distributor bolts were tightened.
  1. Remove the jumper from the STI terminal at the DLC.
  1. Remove the Rotunda Timing Analyzer 164-R0257 or equivalent.

Following the label under the hood. Put in base timing mode by unplugging a wire connector, it usually tells you where it is. This will turn on the check engine light to tell you you're in base timing mode and takes the ECM out of the loop. Should be a single wire tan in color with a black stripe and black connector. If you not sure where the connector is, it's in the passenger compartment behind the carpet, and blower heater. Just follow along the wire harness from the ECM. Special Tool(s)

  1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Remove the fuel supply manifold.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing.
  6. Remove the roller followers.
  7. NOTE: You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at top dead center (TDC).
  8. NOTE: Late build pulley shown, early build pulley similar. NOTE: The special tool must be installed on the damper and should contact the engine block to position the engine at TDC.

There are no marks on this one. There is a special tool set to align camshafts ($900). The best you can do is to bring #1 cyl to TDC compression with both cam(valve) covers off. #5 cyl should have lobes at equal opening, exhaust just closing and intake just opening.. #1 cyl cam lobes should each be diametrically opposed to the positions of #5. If cams need to be moved, there is no registration of gear onto cam. Just loosen bolt holding gear and move cam. Retighten bolt. Roll thru 2 crank revolutions and check cam timing again.Simple.

Once the distributor is installed correctly at top dead center on number one cylinder, the PCM controls the base timing, the base timing is not adjustable and will fluctuate with certain engine operating conditions such as engine temp,vehicle speed and if the system is in closed or open loop.

Get the engine to #1 TDC (line up the timing marks), orientate the distrubutor rotor by moving the shaft in its drive till the rotor lines up with the cap alignment cut-out in the distributor body. Replace the cap. This will be #1 plug. In a clockwise direction, fit the wire for number 3, number 4, number 2. Carry out a normal timing procedure with a timing light etc.. If the engine will not start or backfires you had the pulley at #4 TDC. Turn the crankshaft 180 deg and realign the distributor shaft as above.

The specs are 10 degrees. 1st find the timing mark indicator on the front of the engine, clean it off so it is visible, 2nd find the timing mark on the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine(lower pulley), mark it (groove) with white chalk and wipe off excess, this will make it easier to see while engine is running. 3rd find the shorting plug for the distributor, should be on the left hand fender well up by the firewall, 2 wire connector with a grey or black plug stuck in it with no wires coming out. To set timing, hook up timing light, remove shorting plug and observe timing mark while engine is running, it should be steady at 10 degrees, if not loosen distributor lock bolt and rotate distributor until it does. It is very important that the shorting plug be removed, this is the only way to reach base timing (w/o computer). When finished reinstall shorting plug, ignition timing will be advanced by the computer automatically. Hope this helps, let me know.

Need the torque specs for a 1994 350 cyl head the one with the 4 bolts through the center of the valve cover and is this the same spec for a vortec engine

  1. Tighten the cylinder head bolts a little at a time, in the sequence shown. Tighten the bolts in three stages:
    • First pass: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
    • Second pass: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)

it is located in the rear driver's side of the engine compartment. Although if you just follow the fuel line (it should have a flow arrow on it) from the engine block out it will run into the fuel filter

I need to know what the compression specs are for a 1994 351W Fuel Injected Ford Bronco.

Minimum compression is 100 psi @ 200 rpm. The lowest cylinder reading should not be less than 80% of the highest reading. Perform the compression test with engine at normal operating temperature, spark plugs removed and throttle wide open. Normally I look for about 170 psi to 180 psi.

1994 aspire timing belt

It has a noninterferance engine. I have the same model car. The big problem is changing the timing belt. You'll need an impact wrench for the crankshaft bolt. You'll have to either hoist the engine out of the car or remove it from the passenger side engine block and lower it down. Even then you may have to notch out some metal from the wheel well to get at the crankshaft bolt. All in all, its a job best left to a professional, because you haven't even got to the tricky part yet.
