Question about 2003 BMW 5 Series

1 Answer

No spark I have a 520 tourer 1998 model. Replaced the old flat battery with a slightly larger battery that got from a friend. Started first time after a few on and offs with the engine, thought all was fine. Next morning going to work tried to start but engine just gave a few coughs and splutters, then nothing. Engine rocker cover was removed to check chain-all okay. Removed plugs- soaking wet with petrol. I am not getting a spark now, could i have damaged an electrical part that controls the spark with the oversized battery.

Thanks ..but all electric seem okay apart from the obvious engine failure. Bought a new battery today to rule out this. Not 100% sure how to check for spark as each plug has is own coil. these look a bit odd to check- does the coil need earthed or do you just fix the plug in the spring loaded cap and go for it?

job done :) ...Original fault was down to worn spark plugs and flat battery. Trick to restarting was to clean up old plugs then heat plugs with gas flame - I used portable camping stove. Turned over engine (30 secs) without plugs in to dry up cylinders reinserted hot plugs (with gloves on). Turned over engine- it took a good while to start running normally- thanks to my new battery. Going to treat the car to a new full set of plugs tomorrow and fingers crossed that should be that......

Note: Speaking on the phone to BMW emergency call out services. To restart a flooded BMW engine he recommended keeping the throttle to the floor for a 15 sec period? Seemed to work for me apart from the fact that it was more like 2 mins before it started.

Need to know how to straighten slightly bent valves 1999 rodeo

You will be sorry to hear that there is no way to straighten bent valves. They need to be replaced with new ones, and refit to the head. This situation makes me worry about the crank bearing process: was the CAUSE of the bearing failure resolved? Was the crank repaired and turned? Was the block measured and issues resolved? and Finally was the bearing clearance measured with plasti-gauge?

F250 ford 4x4 ,460 auto started stays on disconected battery when tried to hook it up again ,lots of arc & sparks ,just recently replaced starter and cylonoid

Go to the fuse panel and start disconnecting fuses. Start with the larger amp fuse first, then go back to the battery and see if the spark stops. If it does, on any particular fuse, trace that fuse to see what it supplies then repair or replace the device at fault.

1998Mitsubishi Diamante keeps stalling when you stop

I have a 1997 Diamante has the same symptoms after the battery went flat. The automatic transmission serviceman said it was the computer controlling the transmission loosing it's program and had to re-train itself. He said there was a procedure for defaulting the computer but is was easier just to drive the car and it would fix itself.
My experience after owning the car for a number of years and several flat batteries is it fixes itself after about 1000 kilometers
