Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Dash lights cut out

The lights for the mileage etc keep cutting out, the windows and radio as well

The headlights work except for when I turn on high beams then all the lights cut out.

I have replaced the battery and the wiring
alternator was removed taken in and checked, it is good.

I had previoiusly taken apart ignition and cleaned everything up,
could I still need a new ignition switch or is there something else
I could try to fix this problem

what happened when you tried jumping the car? sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch since only non-switched things work.

You may need to replace the switch in the steering column/dash (wherever it is mounted). There is also a fuse under the dash/glove compartment - if it's blown, this may be affecting it as well. Also, check to ensure the harness for each headlight is securely inserted to the bulb. Turn headlights on and also check to see that all running lights are on and opporable, as well as hazards, blinkers and any other additional lights such as "fog" lights etc if equipped.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

The day time running light module on the back side of the front drivers fender likely needs to be replaced to fix your problem.Unplug it and the lights will work normally from the headlight switch but the day time running lights won,t work and also the high beam indicator light in the dash won,t come on when you switch to high beam but all the lights will work properly. You should replace the drl module as soon as you can but unplugging it will at least keep you from having to remove a battery cable.

you have a loose wire or a short somewhere in the dash. Hopefully you can fix without changing the harness out. I'd try some test to try to isolate the problem. with the engine off, and the lights on and radio on, reach under the dash to where your fuses are located and lightly move the wires coming from the fuse box watching and listening for the short. If you cant locate here, move your hand deeper into the dash again lightly mving the wires behind the radio and then the light swtich. good luck of finding this.

Might be a timing issue. Have your timing chain/belt checked. If not that, definitely a fuel issue.

Dash goes out when i turn head lights on

This sounds to me like you may have a faulty headlight switch. If the switch is on the steering column, you will need to replace the whole multi-function switch assembly, if it is on your dash panel, you should be able to just replace the actual headlight switch. Hope this helps.

Lights go out on dash DIC

make sure you clean your positive battery terminal. It can be quite corroded in there without any outside signs. Next check ground connections (main ground is under the underhood fuse box...is it rusted down there? If it's none of those, start looking at the ignition switch.
