Question about Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

The car will only start when the stirring colum is all the way up. It will stall out when you try and tilt the steering down to drive. Some times it will not start at all. Another problem is the water pump died. I replaced it no problem. When I tested it after the panel indicator said it was low on water and went into the red. I changed the thermostate. refilled rad bleed out the air. The panel indicator indicates it is still low on water but the temperature gauge is steady and does not go into the red.

Hi,

It would seem that you have two (2) concerns:

  • starting with steering column down - would indicate a loose connector that is being stretch/forced out. Often this would be the connector of the harness leading to the ignition switch;
  • water level reads low - actually should be coolant level indicator. This would be the sensor (two prongs/stiff wire) inside the coolant reservoir. In some instances, the prongs gets corroded and therefore would require cleaning. In some other occasion, the connector might be loose. Of course, the reservoir itself must be filled with coolant. There are some reports of a computer glitch. Apparently, it would need to be reset (remove one of the battery terminals for a few minutes). Pls be informed that there are some stereo units and alarms/security that would require coded entry when the battery is removed.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

if you have a floor shift and the replacement has a colum shift..you can use the colum and remove the pin that holds the shift arm on..it comes out with a pin remover .. just tap it down and out..the arm slides out..then use as normal..

My turn signals don't work on a 2000 ford

If you have tilt steering,after a while wires in colum tend to cut in half when tilting up and down. Not to complicated to fix. Take apart colum by removing the three screws underneath,philips(star screwdriver) then unscrew the handle that tilts the strring,you will see a flat part to the rod,,,then remove plastic that suronds the colum,all clip ons.Take a pointy tool or nail will do,put the key in the ignition,you will see a hole underneath the key cylinder,push in and the whole baril with key will come out.Now you can remove both plastics covering colum and the problem should be odvious,,,,,Be patient and enjoy your fix.

Sounds like your ignition/key tumbler is worn. A lot of times tumblers can get worn to the point that the keys will stop working or work sometimes. Usually the key goes bad first, since they tend to get the most abuse. It is not expensive to replace. I hope this helps.

Loose or damaged wiring in the steering colum. I'd suggest having a professional repair done, most likely the steering wheel will have to be removed and there's a chance of setting off the airbag. Dangerous and expensive.

Steering column loose and causes auto to stall and jump out of gear when steering wheel moves.

There are 3 tilt colum screws deep inside the colum, it's common for them to come loose and eventually cause wiring problems. special tools are required to thighten the torx head screws.

Used colums for that year are cheap however.
