Cooling fan motor

The cooling fan motor doesn't start when I believe it should be running and I have no idea where the fuse box is. Anybody?

The junction box is under the hood the cooling fans are controled by a relay and a thermostatic sensor. please rate this

Radiator fan do not work


check the all the fuses under the dash and under the hood. if they are good then, you can disconnect the rad fan electrical connector at the fan, then using 2 jumper wires you can jumper the fan motor to see if the fan works. you jumper the fan motor just like you would jumping a car. if the fan runs then you will have to check the fan relay, sometimes you can use another relay in the relay box. if the fan doesn`t work then the rad cooling fan is defective and will have to be replaced.

At the main fuse and relay box, check the 30A EGI INJ fuse. If OK, the main relay closes to apply power to the cooling fan relay. Next, check the 30A FAN 1 and FAN 2 fuses.If OK, power is being applied to the fan control module. The PCM processes engine coolant temperature sensor input and sends a signal to the fan control module which, in turn, causes the cooling fan motor to operate. Fan failure could be caused by malfunction of the cooling fan relay, the fan control module, the engine coolant temperature sensor, the cooling fan motor itself, or the PCM

Hi there:

P1491 is for the cooling fan relay control circuit as you've found already.Start by checking the fuse for the fan relay. Its in the box under the hood, a 40 amp fuse.If you've got a couple jumper wires, you can unplug the fan connector and carefully jump the fan to see if it works. The fan connector is on the right side of the back of the fan shroud. Unplug it and jump the black wire to ground and the green to positive. You've got to be very careful doing this though-you are in very tight quarters, its not hard for your jumper wires to touch each other in the connector and short together, and if you use small diameter jumper wires they will get hot quickly when the fan comes on.If the fan doesn't come on when you jump it, or if it runs slow or sounds bad, you've got a bad motor and will need to replace the fan assembly. One thing that does happen somewhat often, is a bad fan motor will burn up the relay. If the fan motor is drawing too much current it will overload the relay and burn it up. This is why its so important that if the fan motor runs slow or makes noise that you replace it, or you may end up burning up relays frequently.If the fan runs and the fuse is good, its very likely you just need a fan relay. This is a pulse width modulated relay, not the on/off clicker type you'd find in the fuse box. This unit is capable of infinite speed control. It gets very hot in operation, so its mounted to the body sheet metal to allow heat to dissipate through the sheet metal. The relay is mounted under the right headlamp held down with two 8mm screws. To get to it you have to remove the front bumper cover and headlamp bracketry to access the relay. These relays are pretty common.

The fan on my 2004 Grand Prix quit working 2 weeks ago. Checked fuses and that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any ideas?


if its the cooling fan at the rad then your talking about then if you disconnect the plug on the fan and run jumper wires to it directly from the battery it should run.also check the plug connection to make sure its in good condition and no corrosion.if you jump the fan motor and it doesn`t run tap the motor it should run either way if it doesn`t then the cooling fan motor needs replacing.

I have a 2003 jaguar x type 2.5 the cooling fans not working and over heats


cooling systems are the same for all vehicles, depending on years ,, in your case all you have is a fan, relay, and sensor, controlled by a circuit with a fuse, so , always check fuses first, if bad replace,, if not, unplug the fan at the connector,, use a jumper wire to supply the fan with 12 volts direct from the battery ,, if it starts, its not the fan, if it doesn't the fan needs replacing, if that checked out to be good,, backtrack to the fan relay, ( usually the problem) locate it in the under the hood fuse box, it will be listed on the tag on the underside of the fuse box cover ( or in the owners manual itself) you should have a couple of the same relay in this box,, ( Jaguar uses the same relay for a number of items) locate the one for the fan, and switch it out for one that runs a system you know is working, start the vehicle,, and let it run until the thermostat opens,, watch the temp gauge don't let it move up to high. soon after , the fan should start , if by now the system isn't working, its going to normally be a short in that circuit, and would have to looked at by a trained professional with knowledge in electrical circuits

My car runs fine everythiing seems good, just had a new radiator put on it, but when my car sits running for awhile it starts to overheat, then i start to drive and it cools back down?. please help


Check the electric cooling fan. There will be a sensor on the engine to tell it to turn on. The electric motor itself may be defective, and lastly, there will be a fuse to power the motor. Also, if the engine has been running hot, it may have damaged the thermostat. But from your description, that doesn't seem likely. Hope this helps.

In my saturn the fan does not turn and the car runs hot


You can have a couple things going on. One being a bad temperature sensor. Dont be to surprised many cars have 2 and for one of them its only function is to tell the fan when to turn on. The other is a bad fan motor. Jumper a wire from the battery to the connector and see if it turns on. If it doesn't then you need a new motor.

I have a 1999 chevy cavalier and the cooling fan will not start


CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH GOOD SCAN CAR TO CHECK COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULT CODE.THE PCM AND COOLANT TEMP. SENSOR IS WHAT CAUSE FAN TO RUN AT CERTAIN TEMPERATURE.IF ALL IS GOOD.HOT WIRE COOLING FAN USING JUMPER WIRES TO BATTERY.IF FAN DONT RUN REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE SHORT OR BROKE WIRE IN THE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.
