Let me add more info. Engine off and key on. shifter in P or N can turn puh button on/off no problem and with it on or off I can shift into drive or second no problem but if I try to turn it on or off in drive it blows the fuse. The Ford tech repaired the wire and said I was good to go(looks like my 8 year old did it) Unplugged the harness at the back of the trans on pass side still blows the fuse.

I also think it will be the shifter lever O/D switch shorting under the column cover where the wires bend when moving the shifter .
Good Luck

Hi ktm-dave,

The short circuit may be in the soloniod that operates the overdrive.

Sorry pal, you'll have to go through it yourself....
.....Disconnect the cable from the soloniod and then see if the fuse still blows....If it does, then you'll know that it's not the soloniod.....
.....I think that the switch on the column, will control a relay....The coil side of the relay will be grounded and that will cause the switch part to close, and that in turn will allow power to the soloniod....which in fact is just a bigger relay, carrying a heavier amperage.....
.....You'll need to isolate each part of the circuit, untill you find out where the short or over load is....Once you've discovered that you can either isolate the defective wiring and run a new cable, or sort out the original, finding out what is causing the over load.....Sorting it out and fixing it is better than by passing it.....

best regards Johngee10

Why does car horn keep blowing when fuse inserted, then blows the fuse?

There is a spring in the steering column. Held with plastic. The plastic breaks. causing to sound off. When the fuse blows it is high resistance . Fixing it is costly and time consuming. Live without it if you can.

2001 ford escape interior instrument cluster and rear fuse keeps blowing. Have changed it three times in a week. Works for a bit then blows again.

There is an electrical fault that causes the fuse to blow. Maybe a wire has chafed against the metal body and vibrations causes it to short out the fuse. This requires checking the wiring from the instrument cluster to the fuse box for worn insulation etc.

The f9 fuse keeps blowing when putting the car in reverse on my 2005 ford focus

The only thing that will cause a fuse to blow is more amperage going through that circuit than the fuse is rated for. Normally that means there is a short to ground somewhere in that circuit. Finding that short can be difficult.

I have seen multiple trucks with similar fuse blowing problem and have found most are caused by a shorted out overdrive switch or wiring inside the steering column. Usually this is triggered by moving the shifter or something on the column though usually the shifter since thats where the overdrive switch is mounted. If the wiring is the problem after the connector in the column then you have to replace the entire shift lever since the wiring for the overdrive switch is integral to the shift lever.

My truck keeps blowing the instrument panel fuse.

My 2002 F350 keeps blowing fuse 45. I lose the instrument cluster (all gauges) and there is no throttle response. Sounds like a wire for the od button is shorting out in the steering column. Remove the ignition switch and column shroud and look for a bare wire. be sure and look by where the boot sits. I am just looking for more info before I try it myself. Hope this works for others.

Blowing fuses

THIS IS PROBABLY TOO LATE BUT HERE GOES.

THERE IS A CONNECTOR UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN FOR THE LIGHT SWITCH. THE WIRES GET HOT AND DAMAGE THE CONNECTION. THE BEST THING TO DO IS **** CONNECT THEM TOGETHER.

Turn signal flasher keeps blowing

This is more than likely caused by a Bad Turn Signal Switch Housing inside the Sterring column. The one that the Handle is attached to and Wraps around the Sterring Shaft on the Inside of the Column.

Instrument cluster not working and truck wont go

I had the same issue with my 2002 F250 7.3 L. The overdrive switch was shorting the circuit due to exposed wires in the steering colum. I replaced the switch and resolved the problem.
