I ran my 01 dodge durango pretty low on gas a few times. It was running fine when i pulled up to the gas pump. I put about 6 gallons in and when I started it, it has been shaking and sputtering ever since. What might the problem be?

  • Sounds like you might have got a bad batch of gas, it happens. I would go to a different gas station and put some high quality gas in it and also add a can of heat to the tank. This will evaporate any water that might be in the gas tank.

  • After running a pump dry you can start to ware on it and even ruin it if you try to engage it with no gas. Also it is possible from running the tank almost empty that sock on the fuel pump was exposed to more than it's fair share of contaminants. A little more fuel in the tank might help a bit.

  • Might want to change the fuel filter if it's been a while too. The fuel filter gets might clogged after a while. It's an easy hob to replace and is cheap and necessary about every 15,000 miles.

  • I assume you don't have a check engine light on or you would have put that down.

  • Hope this helps.

I did forget to mention that the check engine light is on. I put 9 more gallons of premium gas and a bottle of heat. Still seems sluggish but a little better.

If you have a check engine light on the you want to go to Auto Zone, NAPA or your local major parts store and they will read your codes for free. Write them down and then have them cleared. when an error is detected by one of the many sensors in your vehicle it is sent to the PCM and the light comes on. The fact that it is on mean it is still an active code. So now you definitively have something else going on (or had).

Why won't my car stay running after it ran out of gas

Most newer cars are very sensitive to being ran low on gas. The fuel pump is in the tank and relies on fuel to cool it down. Your fuel pump is now probably not pumping the required pressure for the fuel injection system to work properly (or at all).

Car wont start after I ran out of gas

Take off the smaller wire off the starter motor. Put the key in the start position and hold it there for a few seconds. Listen for the fuel pump running. If you hear it running then it feels like it stopped, then let go of the key and reinstall that wire on the starter motor. It should start.

We have replaced our 02 sensors twice initally it

Having owned and thoroughly enjoyed an 01 Durango SLT plus for 6 years, congrats on having the "D".

How many miles on your D? Aging O2 sensors can cause mileage to drop. Which engine do you have? The 4.7 or the 5.9?

You will pretty much find that 11-13 mpg in town is the norm, and 17 is normal for hwy cruising. Towing though in either case will have quite an effect.

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango 4.7 that ran out of gas in my driveway. I have since put 6 gallons of fuel in it, but it will not start and the gas gauge isn't registering the fuel. Any advice would be much...

check the fuel pump fuse and the relay. check to see if you can hear to pump running when you turn the key to the run pos. open the fuel door and remove the cap stick your ear close to the filler tube and have some one turn the key to the run pos without starting if you do hear anything and all fuses and relays are good get a test light and probe the power wire going to the pump. (follow the harness that goes above fuel tank. if you dont knoe which one is the power wire coming from that little harness just try probing alll of them one at a time.but, every time you go to a differnt wire you must cycle the key off then to the run pos. while the test light is touching inside the wire.
if the light comes on go under the hood and look at your fuel rail there should be a vavle that looks like a vavle stem on your cars tire press it while key is on if it very low pressure replace pump.if it has a lot of pressure you dont have a fuel issue.

How to restart my 2004 dodge durango after it ran out of gas

Put at least 3 gallons of fuel in your tank. Turn the key to the on position and let the fuel pump run for a little bit to refill the fuel lines. Attempt a restart.
