how can i test the sensor -what values should it read ie is there a test procedure

  • Clifford Beard
    Clifford Beard Nov 04, 2011

There are several tests to do before you test the sensor itself like ground and continuity going to and from the PCM. The last time I recieved this code on a Dakota, it ended up being the PCM But there were many times it was just an open circuit. I believe the resistance is between 300.0 and 1200.0 ohms. You can email me at [email protected] for further tests if you want. I check my email off and on as you can see.

Where is the TRANSMISSION INPUT SPEED SENSOR?

so did not check all fuses first?
then scan the PCM for all transmission DTC errors first?
oops.
1999 dodge durango 5.9L (46RE TRANS i GUESS)
there is no , in or on tranny input speed sensor
the PCM uses ENGINE RPM for that. (crank sensor RPM, CKP)
if you scan the PCM you will not see DCT error for input speed sensor there is none.

Trouble Code: P0753 (5.9L V8 VIN Z Auto)
A/T 3-4 Solenoid/Transmission Relay Circuit Failurenone there below. but sure CKP is. crank speed
and SOL 2 and gov pressure, are key.

99-undefined-undefined-0.jpgSOLENOID 2 bad? above.
why are you not scanning it first. for DTCs
what if governor pressure signals are wrong. pin 29
what if the scan told you it was. likethis.
examples
Trouble Code: P0700 (5.9L V8 VIN Z Auto)
Automatic Transmission Control System Malfunction
Trouble Code: P0711 (5.9L V8 VIN Z Auto)
A/T Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Signal - No Rise After StartupTrouble Code: P0705 (5.9L V8 VIN Z Auto)
A/T Check Shifter Signal Circuit Malfunction''
Trouble Code: P0715 (5.9L V8 VIN Z Auto)
A/T Input Speed Sensor Circuit MalfunctionISS is what? (CKP is my guess)

lots more on gear errors
then
Trouble Code: P0748 (5.9L V8 VIN Z Auto)
A/T Governor Pressure Solenoid/Transmission Relay Fault783 is last one. lots of P07 errors on this box
all covered in the service manual in detail.
learn that some cars the PCM has what are called virtual or derived sensors, like engine load is (used to shift too)
and inputs speed, is CKP sensor and ABS the 4 sensors abs are averaged to do speed.(mph)
but in this case it is crank speed CKP
no PCM schematic shows any ISS at all

one can not fix modern cars lacking a SCAN tool, USA OBD2 .
not really and ASE class Day 1,
read all TSBcheck all fusesscan it.service manual online, great !

sure speed sensors sure.but what else.
the pcm fails to pick he 3rd gear soleniodthe PCM is in limp mode.the gov signal sensor is bad. and wrong (not sure how to replace it me., output sensor dead. recap and conclusions. electronic shifted trans. TCM
not getting 3rd gear has many causes:
I'd hazard a guess that pump output pressure and regulator are working in the box. (1 >>2shifts ok)
3rd gear solenoid not dead?
and the lies told by governor pressure sensor, makes the TCM shift wrong (computer GiGo logic) caused.
3rd gear servo piston dead.
or some odd Limphome mode, (iDK them all) (ignoring DTC errors? ) Some trans in limp slip a gear.
The governor must see tail shaft speeds correctly or it will not up-shift all the way.

a scan tool can be bought or rented. or ask others to scan it, any shop can, or some Autostores can
there is no reason no to scan it after fuses check, unless 3 gear is needed to get there (hummmmmmm)
$100
also the tool pays for it self (it's free man) the first $100 in labor not spent,. amazing facts no?
a real scan tool not $20 lame code reads,
a real tool see all Dodge codes.
cheaper readers only show DTC errors only with "CEL lamp ON"< , P07xxx code (7 means transmissions errors)
better tools start at %100

I have a 1998 dodge caravan 3.3L fault codes p0500 p0700 p0720 p0715, how do I repair and replace sensors to pass smog test

Follow the links for each fault code.
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0500
P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
P0720 Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0715 sets when there is an error in the transmission's input speed sensor signal. On the front of the trans there is an input and output speed sensor that the trans controller looks at for shifting control.

While the code could have set because of a wiring or connection problem, it's almost surely the sensor. Input speed sensor failures are not uncommon.

The input speed sensor is mounted right on the front of the trans directly under where the cooler lines attach. It threads directly in and has a 1" hex for a socket for removal. If the wiring and connection look visibly ok then I would recommend replacing the sensor

Transmission down shifting to 2 code po 700 or but it does not shift to 3rd gear anymore was resetting it 1st time lasted a month then every 2 or 3 weeks now i can"t reset it anymore no codes

P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Article by Dale Toalston ASE Certified Technician Transmission Control System TCS Malfunction What does that mean? Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory. This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM's memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0700 DTC may include: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination The transmission may exhibit drivability problems like slipping, etc. Causes More often then not, the cause of this code is that there is a transmission problem of some kind. The TCM detected the problem and set a code. P0700 means that a fault code is stored in the TCM. However this doesn't rule out the possibility of a failed PCM or TCM (unlikely). Possible Solutions For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself. The code p0720 show on my dodge caravan 96/3.8/v6 that mean output speed sensor and i had done it.but the van can reach to 60km,at 3000rpm(can not change gear)one thing when i took speed sensor out it is...

P0720 Outputspeed sensor circuit failure. The ECM uses this sensor in comparison to the input speed sensor and then command a gear change. This sensor has a very high failure rate. so did you replacei t with a new on and you still got this code, First the location its to the right of the manual shift lever.shaft. What get me is that metal chips that are on it.then there are the non magnetic chip that youll need to inspect for. Go the the transmission dipstick, engine running vehicle in park, safety brakes on,and wheels block. Check the fluid level are you at the correct level,? If not correct it. run the transfluid on your hand,do you see any non metalic chip.? It will be silverish or goldish in color. is it burnt (blackish). If you see any of these you have a transmission failure, and a new or rebuilt will be needed. But before you jump to that try to change the fluid,.Why? because of the metal chips in there. and retest the vehicle, put the proper fluid in it .Its AFT-4 that is what it calls for,and replace the filter. Here is one more area of concern do you hear a whinning noise as you drive the van? If you do then the transmission has failed and no fluid change will help.you may be looking for rebuilt or replacement.

Check engine light with following codes p 1529 p0720 p0715

P1529 indicates that your TCM asked the ECM to turn on the check engine lamp.

The range switch and the output speed sensors are the items that are abnormally affecting the operation of the transmission. The diagnostic logic in your computer can distinguish these issues from one another, so you'll definitely want to do both. You have no diagnostic code for the input speed sensor (P0715) listed, so I have made no recommendation to replace it. In my opinion, it's not a labor-intensive repair, so I wouldn't recommend replacing it unless you have reason to believe it's bad.

DTC - P0720 (OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR SYSTEM)
Code No. P0720 Output shaft speed sensor system
If the output from the output shaft speed sensor is continuously 50% lower than the vehicle speed for 1 second or more while driving in 3rd or 4th gear at a speed of 30 km/h or more, it is judged to be an open circuit or short-circuit in the output shaft speed sensor and diagnostic trouble code No. P0720 is output. If diagnostic trouble code No. P0720 is output four times, the transmission is locked into 3rd gear or 2rid gear as a fail-safe measure.
Probable cause
Malfunction of the output shaft speed sensor
Malfunction of the transfer drive gear or driven gear
Malfunction of connector
Malfunction of the TCM

DTC - P0715 (INPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR SYSTEM)
Code No. P0715 input shaft speed sensor system
If no output pulse is detected from the input shaft speed sensor for 1 second or more while driving in 3rd or 4th gear at a speed of 30 km/h (19 mph) or more, it is judged to be an open circuit or short-circuit in the input shaft speed sensor and diagnostic trouble code No. P0715 is output. If diagnostic trouble code P0715 is output four times, the transaxle is locked into 3rd gear or 2nd gear as a fail-safe measure.
Probable cause
Malfunction of the input shaft speed sensor
Malfunction of the underdrive clutch retainer
Malfunction of connector
Malfunction of the TCM

Is needed replace.
