Question about 2001 BMW 330
Car is jumping and missing and smoke out exhaust making a rattle noise its done 40.000 mile
the jumping, missing and rattling could be a result of poor timing.
Have you had the timing checked. If your timing belt or timing chain have some how jumped a slot or two on the cam gears then you may be trying to fire spark plugs at the wrong time and hence creat very poor running of the engine and sometimes due to valves being open at the wrong time it can result in back fires, or fuel ingniting through the intakes even.
Get the timing checked out - if you haven't changed the timing belt at an appropriate change it may be a deteriorating belt or a bad tensioner that is allowed the belt to slip.
If the timing is checked and the timing is good then you have bigger problems. Its possible the head gasket is leaking as per the previous entry, causing Light grey smoke to come out your exhaust. The coolant level would be going down though in that case and you need to check to see if the coolant level is reducing and also if there is a grey/brown sludge floating in your coolant fluid which would usually collect under the radiator cap.
If its blue smoke out your exhaust then it indicates oil being burnt and I would say you have some serious value issues, but for this to make the noise you mention it would have to be something like perhaps a bent valve or the 40000 miles you quoted is not accurate and you have a car that has been "Clocked" and has many more miles on it.
