If you use a test light you can check for voltage at the large terminal on the starter it should have voltage all the time with or without the key on.then check the small terminal with someone trying to start it.it should light up if it does then while someone is trying to start the car take a hammer and tap the starter if it starts then the starter needs to be replaced due to an internal problem with the starter.

Would replacing the ignition switch be a more permanent fix?

Looks like a car alarm feature not ignition problem.
When my vehicle is flashing and will not start I have to push my key fob unlock button. Do you have a key fob?

2003 grand am security system signal car wont start

Turn the key to the on position, leave it on until the security light stops flashing. (About 10 minutes) turn key off, then try to start. If it starts it's a bad body control module. Google override directions.

Ignition is on security light flashes car will not start serurity light stays on solid than try to start the battery will be dead

I had a 2000 Grand Am that did the same thing with the security light a couple of times. If I remember correctly you need to turn the ignition on for like 10 mins and then turn it off and it should start. I believe it tells you what to do in the owners manual if that doesn't work.

I turn the key and the security light flashes

leave the key in the ignition, turned to 'run' (just before the crank position) and leave it there for about 15 minutes-the security light will then stop flashing-so NOT turn it off, turn it to crank and start the car. You have a security module that is not seeing the same resistance in the ignition switch as it expects, meaning you will have to either replace the ignition switch (expensive) or bypass the module (easy and inexpensive)-I have done lots of these, requires about 15 cents worth of parts and can be done in 1/2 hour.

2003 Pontiac Grand AM suddenly won't start and security light is flashing on the dash board. All systems are OK such as Battery new, fuel ok and ignition starting system ok. Looks like some anti-theft...

Check to see if you have a computer chip on your key. Chances are that the computer chip or the reader in the ignition keyhole is not reading it properly. If you leave the key on, engine off, for 15-20min. that security will reset and the light will go off. Turn key off and now try to start engine.

Hi. I have a 99 Pontiac Grand Am. I've had that problem before. All I did was...whenever the security light would flash...and the car wouldn't start...I would take the key out...and just sit there and wait for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then the red light would stop flashing....and the car would start. That would happen about 2 times a year. Now I'm having trouble getting it to start. It's trying to...but won't turn over. My mechanic put a new computer....but now he doesn't know what is wrong. Please help. Thanks.

2004 pontiac grand am car will not start

the security light will flash and disable the fuel injectors preventing the car from starting, if it thinks that it is being stolen. its easy to fix. set the parking brake to turn off the automatic headlights. next turn the key to the on position and wait ten minutes. the security light should stop flashing. then turn the key off and this will reset the security system. it should start immediatly afterwards.
