Question about 2004 BMW 3 Series
After the ambient temperature sensor fell-off, the cluster stopped working. I separated the 2x cables (both white) and insulated them. How do I get the clsuter to work
Check on ebay, I had the same prob with mine, 3 lights blew out. Check 12v_electronics, NEW MERCEDES VW BMW DASH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BULBS 1.5W. This is where i bought mine and have not had any prob. No dealer or parts house will carry this bulb seperate.

SOURCE: instrument cluster dead
If your replacement cluster is a used cluster, it might have the same problem, which usually is bad solder points where the main connector connects onto the circuit board of the cluster. If you do some internet searches under Caravan instrument cluster solder you should get lots of sources for instructions and photos of the problem. Sometimes the bad solder points are NOT really visible to the eye, so it's best to put a drop of solder on every one of the points where the connector attaches to the board. That fixed mine. If your cluster is brand new, I don't know what to tell you.

Common problem on BMW's apparently...there are on-line repair services but they are NOT cheap...100-300 bucks. Tough to fix yourself...unles you are a highly skilled techie!
