Question about 1998 Dodge Ram

97 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab w/n turn over

Ron,

I went to purchase the TPS and EGR valve as you suggested, however, when I brought them home to install, the didn't match what was in the truck. When I returned them to Autozone, the clerk, by process of elimination w/ the TPS determined that the parts I need are for a 1998 model. I checked the door sticker and it says mfr date is 7/97. The clerk also said that that model doesn't even have an EGR valve. He could not identify the component that I had brought in that I thought was the EGRv. Know now that it is a 98 model what is your diagnosis for my trouble code of 355.

Common problem with Dodge Rams. Nobody has the right parts (dealer only) the right part numbers, or the right diagrams or component lists or locations.
The 5.9 L most likely has no EGR valve, as mine does not. It does however have an Idle Air Control Valve located at the back bottom of the throttle body, which if removed, will show carbon buildup, preventing proper fuel/air mix.
You also may have a vacum leak at one or more vacum hoses on the intake manifold, a leak at the vacum ball that stores vacum for working the vent controls when the engine is off. It looks like a big black ball, and has a vacum line going from the top of the intake to the ball, maybe located behind the RH pass headlight. The rubber hoses dry oput, crack, and rot after a few years due to OZONE exposure from the air. Go ot and buy 6 or 8 feet od 3/32 rubber vacum hose, and replace everything that is suspect. Look for cracked Ts. Dont forget to check the larger vacum hoses that go to the charcoal canister and fuel tank vent valves. The rubber elbows have a tendency to pop off the charcoal canister connectors on a hot day if you overfill the gas tank, and the rubber elbows are old and stretched out.
God Luck.

I have a 1995 dodge 1500 with a 5.9. I changed the cap rotor and plugs. I had to pull the distributer, because the 2 bolts busted. I marked everything and put it back the same way.It will fart but it won't...

If you pull the distributor with CAP "ON" you didn't see which the rotor turned as it disengaged from lower gears. ( ie if it turned counter clock wiwse two wire positions then you re-install it by turning it the same two wire positions and install it. That way ir rotates back to it's position as it enter the lower spiral gear.)

Replaced front seal on my '97 Dodge Ram 1500, V6

Assembly of converter to trans and then tunit to engine? The torque converter must engage and slide into the front pump. The seal is easily damamaged if not properly fitted.Once the trans is against the engine the converter can be slid forward to bolt the flex plste. There should not be more than approx. 1/4 inch between the converter and trans bell housing if the converter is properly mated to the trans. Good Luck, Ned.

Local auto recyclers have access to that info now. Their info is probably your best bet, as they need to know that all the time.
