Well to replace the TC, you have to unbolt the transmissions bell housing from the rear of the engine. Then, it's rather simple from there on in. I'd suggest a full manual for the car so you could know what you're looking at.

Either way, without a good selection of tools, and the right spot to work on it, it's probably better just to have a mechanic look at it.

As for the TC actually going out, it's not highly likely that it would. You may just have a really clogged fluid filter and be in desperate need of a transmission flush/change. Also, the valves may be bad as well, which still isn't much of a hassle to replace if you know what you're doing. I've seen hundreds of automatic transmissions go out in my life, but only a few have ever been a direct result of the TC.

What does a shift solonoid do and also what does a torque converter do

A shift solenoid controls oil flow to the clutch packs in an automatic transmission. It uses DC power to turn them on The clutch packs control which gear you want The torque converter is basically a slippable clutch when you accelerate it engages and drives the gearbox

Got a 1990 oldmobile 98 car idle but when I put in gear it turns off

If you can't keep it running by pushing on the gas pedal, chances are the torque converter is faulty.

Won't shift gears

Check trans fluid levels, if they are ok, could be a torque converter or vavle solenoid problem. Check for some fault code is stored.

Why gear number 3 and 4 is engaging but not driving

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
If that's the case, then the torque converter is surely worn out. The torque converter controls the shifting of the car. If it's worn out it may lock on a certain gear or won't shift at all. I strongly suggest that you have the torque converter replaced to resolve the problem.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Warning ligh triangle automatic gear box came on can only operate in 3rd gear and cant go over 60mph ,says contact peugot dealer emeidiatly

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
This can be caused by a faulty transmission solenoid that's why it's running on limp mode, this will require solenoid replacement.
Have you replaced the torque converter before? If not, then it's a faulty torque converter too. The torque converter controls the shifting of the vehicle that when it's faulty, it stays on a certain gear or won't shift at all. I suggest that you have both checked and replace the necessary parts.

Transmission will shift, but car won't move.

Hi, if it is an automatic transmission, it could be several things:
It could be really low on transmission fluid or the fluid may have leaked out. Do you see an reddish or reddish-brown fluid under the car? Check the fluid level by looking at the transmission fluid dipstick.
The torque converter (essentially a motion transfer device that resembles two fans facing each other) may be bad. As the engine spins, up, the fluid in the torque converter starts spinning and flowing and starts to 'spin' the blade on the transmissin side (it's called locking up the torqure converter). If there a malfunction in the converter, or no fluid, as noted above, no motion to the transmission.
Is the emergency brake stuck on?
Another issue might be the transmission linkage - when you move the shift handle to "D", there is a linkage that moves a lever on the transmission to change how fluid moves thru the transmission, etc. Check for a broken linkage between the bottom of the shift handle and the tranny. This is best done at a good auto repair shop or dealer.
If this is a manual transmission car, you probably have a worn out clutch plate or broken shift linkage. See a mechanic.

I installed a used tranny in my 96 TA. it had sat for a while. It doesn't engage at all in any gear.any ideas?

If you are sure the front shaft is 1 -engaged into the torque converter and 2 - the torque converter is securely bolted to the flywheel 3- the fly wheel is securely bolted to the crank shaft and still it won't budge you need to be sure to fill the torque converter with trans fluid [ about 8 quarts -] check with your manufacturer as to how much exactly - AND check your linkage --- try in a SAFE WAY - to move the shifter right on the transmission then try and see if the car will move. Be sure the shift mechanism is actually shifting it into the right gear; try forward and backward to see if it engages. If none of this works you most likely got a bad transmission.

Gears won't engage

I am assuming that it is auto. trans??Check trans. fluid level and look under car to make sure linkage is connected and moving. Also when did it stop working ? all of a sudden or after sitting for long time? or over time? But quick guess, If all is good most likely torque converter went out. Then tranny issue, sorry no easy fix!!!
