My 95 XJ6 has no Dashboard lights.. Like you I have tried changing the dimmer switch to no avail. There is a dead short somewhere in the lighting circuit. A new fuse will sometimes hold for a few minutes then drop out. I've never really understood the need for a dimmer in that area so I'm thinking of bypassing it. I will keep you posted.

The instrument panel lights staying on usually means the dimmer switch is bad (round knob next to steering column movement switch) You can usually turn the knob to a lower position and this will solve the battery issue.

Why is battery light on. new alternator and battery 95 geo prizm

the Aternator "SYSTEM" can fail for these reasons.
skipping bad alterntor.....
1: bad wiring.
2: bad charge lamp (no, not yours)
3: bad connectors , really same as #1
4: alternator not grounded.
5: battery cables bad. (the 4 corroded ends) or the ground wire
to the top starter bolt, not there, or loose.
6: the fuse blew in the front right fender fuse box. (huge fuse, pulls out)
its not this fuse....
7: belt loose.
8: engine RPM way below 800, 750rpm is spec, mininum.

the alternator regulators on all cars , can in fact shut itself down.
this confuses many car fixers.
It will shut down, if.
over voltatge
if over current.
or sees the battery as being, bad, (high internal resistance or OMG not connected.
its really, mostly a 1995 toyota corolla.

facts.
the regulator is inside the alternator;
there are 3 fuses, that can kill it.
IGN, not this one, because that kills spark too.,
GAUGE, not this as that kills the charge lamp.
ALT-S fuse, BINGO?>

the 100amp fuse is not blown or many things on this car die.
to find this cause, takes one tool, a voltmeter.
doing simple tests.

My 1997 CRV will not start after driving it home last night.

Depending on what part of the world you are in, it could be the battery, or a bad connection. Very cold weather can kill a battery, and it can also cause a bad connection to get worse. The starter pulls a large amount of current, and even more so in cold weather.
If nothing comes on when you open the door or turn the key, I would start checking the battery and major connections.

What is the battery life expectancy for the 2006 Buick Lucerne?

Battery life is a very complicated issue, there are TONS of factors. High temperature kills batteries, if the fluid goes low, that kills batteries. If you forget and leave lights on, and the battery goes totally dead, (totally dead, zippo, not anything) that kills batteries.

Alternator diodes that fail kills batteries. So 4 to 8 years is typical life IN ABSENCE of the above types of issues. My favorite battery is Interstate. They just work really well. Costco has great battery prices, bumpy for service... Really Dislike Sears die easy.

1994 saturn keeps killing the battery with car

YOU CAN TAKE THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF BATTERY OFF AND STICK A TEST LIGHT BETWEEN THE TERMINAL AND THE BATTERY, IF TEST LIGHT ILLUMINATES YOU HAVE A DRAW SOMEWHERE. ONE AT A TIME START REMOVING FUSES TO SEE IF TEST LIGHT TURNS OFF. WHEN TEST LIGHT TURNS OFF, DETERMINE WHAT IS CONTROLLED BY THAT FUSE AND FIX YOUR PROBLEM
