A quick fix would be to remove the security systems fuse, disabling it. Assuming this was the only problem and your alright without the security system this is a workable fix.
Alot of the time, "no start" situations can be traced back to the antitheft system. Especially in GM vehicles like your Cadillac. When this system fails, the antitheft system doesn't get the proper signal from your key. This puts they car into antitheft mode and turns off the starter to prevent theft. This may be your problem and worth looking into. Here iss a link that explains all about it.
These cars did have problems with the antitheft system. When this system fails, the car "thinks" it is at risk for theft, and disables the starter. I would look into this before you change the starter. This link explains.
This is a very common GM problem. The anti theft system that is supposed prevent the theft of your vehicle fails and is now locking you out. Go to this site for info and answers that you can do yourself. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
Most likely a security system issue. Make sure the battery is fully charged and you are using an original coded key. Even an original key can sometimes cause this to happen if the key is badly worn.
the Caddy has a shift cable which is a poorly made system. It has broken and a new one is neede. You can order one at any Cadillac dealership or any General Motors dealership as well.
i fixed this problem on mine for .99cents.
1. measure resistance (ohm)across pellit on key
2. go to radio shack and by resistor that matches resistance on key (mine was 11.87 so i bought a 12)
3. orange wire under steering column with two white wires in it. cut it
4. solder resistor in place connecting two white wires on the wire side coming from the car(not steering wheel).
