Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Am
My car's service engine soon light came on. I tried to reset it in the fuse panel but it wouldn't allow it to happen. I had a friend of mine bring his scanner which came up with an error code saying small leak in emissions and something to do with the evaporative.......
Do you have any comments or do you need more info from me? Im not farmiluar with the car terms thing. :)
It could be a number of things from driving through water, Moisture in your electrical, the gas cap sometimes causes this problem. You could even have gotten some really watery gas that triggered the sensors. Mine comes on from time to time. In fact it's on now, I'm going to autozone to hook it up & see what the reader says. I drove through about 5 or 6 inches of rain the other day, & I know it got maoisture somewhere, perhaps it will reset when they hook it up. It did not shut off when I unhooked the battery though.

A P0442 would be a small evaportive emissons leak. The code would help. Generally a small emisson leak is a faulty gas cap. I would make sure that the gas cap is tight and that it is seating properly. For the $$ I would go buy a new one, but from GM only as aftermarket caps cause more problems then they solve. If you left your gas cap off for some time. I would just replace it and drive it for 3 cold starts and see if the light goes away. You can not reset the CEL from the fuse panel. unhooking the battery will do it but it will also reset all emissons monitors. I suggest you drive it with a new or tightned fuel cap and we can go from there.
