Question about 2001 Buick Century

1 Answer

Rear wheel alignment

My girlfriend recently took her car to a Firestone Dealer for a new battery.
While she was there they told her that she had a tire that had a problem and that to replace just one of them would create a problem with the other 3 tires. That sounded fishy to me. Those tires had less then 12,000 miles on them. So, she oked the 4 tire replacement and then they did a front end alignment. They told her that she would soon need a rear wheel alignment. That it was just slightly off. It doesn't sound right to me. I have never heard of a rear wheel alignment on a front wheel drive car. It is not AWD or independent suspension either. Could you set my mind at ease or tell me where to get the info I need to help her make informed decisions in the future?

First of all firestone are rip off artist. you got suckered. next there are struts on the back and yes you should align them however it has more to do with how the tire wears than a steering issue. with only 12,000 miles I seriously doubt there would have been a problem. my solution would have been if one of the front tires was bad i would have replaced it then took the 2 back tires and put them on front and the new tire and other front tire on the back and no alignment would have been needed unless your girlfriend would have complained about it tracking one way or the other. feel free to click on my user tab anytime you need help.... please rate this.........thanks

You should make the front end repairs and then get new tires. An alignment won't help until you replace the bad parts.

Rear wheels, do they use shims?

I believe moog or someone makes a shim that goes between the
axle housing and the wheel bearing to adjust the alignment.
However,if the rear camber is out(the wheels tip in at the top)
The coil spring will also cause this,if the back end is lower than
the front ,bet on the springs.
Easy way to tell,,just jack the vehicle up by the rear bumper in the
center of the back.
only a few inches ,if the wheels "stand " back up the coil springs are at fault.
The Firestone guys are correct I think but that is only a "band-aid"
on the real problem.

We purchased a 2005 Hyundai Tucson recently. It pulls to the right. We took it in for an alignment and the mechanic said he couldn't do it because the rear end was out of alignment and it had to be...

I don't understand why the mechanic told you the alignment had to be done by the dealer (he either noted damage or just didn't know how to do it). Here's a photo of the adjustment bars on the 2005 Tucson. The mechanic simply needs two 22mm wrenches to make the adjustments.

Rear wheel Alignment

First of all Calling Gm wont do any good.Keep all documentation and start taking idiot mechanics to small claims court.I have done this many times due to faulty work.Judges hate mechanis.I have won evertime 3/3.I keep great records thogh.I have a 2008 Impala ss and I have the specs for alignment in front of me.Tire Plus told me that alignment was find and had to show them that it is simple math and the bright red numbers under actual on the toe are telling you to look at it its off.The problem is you have to take the car to a place that actually has Mechanis aligning the car. Most shops use alignment techs which basicakky means hello I am a moron I will mess your car up worse, because I am an idiot. If its not right demand a refund. Also demand before and after specs.Even though the numbers might be in specs,If the numbers on each side dont match closlet the car will still not drive corrctly.

2001 buick century

rear wheel alignments are done only if there is excessive wear on a portion of the tire it's not a real matter of how the vehicle turns or handles. most often times there is a tolerance of +/- 1/8 from center. if you need any other questions answered just click on my user tab. don't forget to rate my help to you...thanks
