Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My diagnostics said to check four wheel drive

It automatically came up when I tried to put/switch it into four wheel drive during a storm a couple of weeks ago.

Four wheel drive


Try engaging the 4wd H when the vehicle is rolling slowly and in gear . Sometimes if the unit is actuated the gears will not line up an get stuck on the end of each other and will not mesh. If the gears are turning this is unlikely to occur and meshing is easier.. have the actuator checked (part that actually does the changing) and check the wiring or vacuum hoses if any used as there may be a leak or wiring /connector problem ( water /moisture/ dirty pins etc)

Cant locate four wheel drive on off switch


sound like you have the automatic four wheel drive system where the transfercase control module controls the 4WD system if you dont see shifter knob on console you have automatic 4WD drive system.

FRONT WHEELS DONT ENGAGE IN 4X4


As this car IS a FRONT wheel drive, that is switchable to four wheel drive (it switches off at 21 mph)if when you switch to 4wd and your fronts have no drive,the drive automatically goes to the wheels with traction(rear)try putting the rears on wet grass and see if you move when you hit the gas........hard.

My 97 z71 does not into or out of four wheel drive


there is a sensor on the tranny or transfer case that may have gone out check this and you may have a quick fix

I engage the four wheel drive in my 2005 Ford F-150 when we had a snow storm this week.Now when switching out of fourwheel drive the transmission wines until you switch it back to fourwheel drive...


the four wheel drive uses vacuum hub locks. there is a vacuum solenoid on the passenger firewall in front of the battery box. sounds like you need a updated solenoid and possibly one or both hub locks. what happens is the old style solenoid vent allows water to get in and the hub locks freeze or stop working because of the water. the new style has a cover over the vent to prevent water from getting in.

4 wheel drive doesn't work now


The vacuum actuator that locks in the front differential is not working, It is either bad or has no vac to it. It is controlled by a vac switch in the top of the transfer case. check the vac supply to the switch and the actuator.

Surburban has gone into four wheel drive and will not come out


you might want to check the gear selector switch that is located on the driver side of the tranny, if the 4x4 is electric and not manual for engagement, selector must read neutral to disengage 4 wheel drive. by experience if you drove it through deep water gear selector switch can get damaged.

How do I activate the 4 wheel drive for snow highway driving?


They didn't make Grand Cherokees in '86, so I assume you mean '96?

I'm also assuming it is indeed a 4x4 and not a two wheel drive...sorry, I have to ask!

All the V8's GC's were Quadra-Trac. Please confirm this with what is label on your shifter. If so, it should say "4Hi, N, and 4Lo".

The Quadra Trac system has a viscous coupling. Meaning, that when the rear wheels start to slip, it heats the coupling up, and engages the front wheels.

This system typically put about 95% of the power to the rear wheels, and only about 5% goes to the front during normal driving, so it's essentially in 2wd mode.

When you put the transmission shifter into neutral, and pull your transfer case down to 4lo, then you have all four wheels locked. Do not drive like this on dry pavement.

To answer your questions, the 4x4 should automatically engage when the rear wheels start to slip. It is a seamless transition and you really won't be able to tell.

If you're in real bad snow, then pull it down to 4lo. That'll lock all four wheels in and give you greatest traction.
