  • lafea99 Sep 24, 2008

oh lord sorry, what a my car when the key is in the ignition as you turn it to get the motor going it does nothing, so they say to change the ignition switch, not the starter, that it should go under the steering, it seems electrical the problem, hope this explanation will help. I tried to get an schematics thru the system, but do not know where to go and download one, thanks again, ana

no lights go on at all, the only way to drive it is to hold the key in place and move to drive, if you let go it turns off the engine and all things will stop, and no, it does not have a springy feel as you reach the end of the cycle to turn engine on,it just seats there. that is how I got it home the day it left me on the gas station, by holding the key all the way to the right and keeping it on the position.

When you turn the ignition key do any lights come on ? If not how does it feel when you turn the key... normal or does the key not have a springy feel and return on it's own to the started position.

Robert ....

I need to make sure you actually do need the switch before i have you taking parts off the car to replace it.

somewhat uncertain if you had the starter engaged all the way home .... but you would have noticed the noise.

    first UNHOOK THE BATTERY

This is where it gets somewhat hard on your back. you have to lay on the drivers seat floor looking up under the dash at the steering wheel. it is doubtful that you will just see it there. You have the replacement switch to compare it to. You will probably need to remove a shield to get to it. once you have the sheild removed. there will be at least 2 bolts holding the starter switch to the steering column. remove those screws... the head is probably a torq type socket. pull the switch down when you get the screws off. remove he connector from the old switch and plug it into the new switch being careful not to break the tabs that hold it. after you have the connector on the new switch hook up the battery and test it out. after you have confirmed it works... UNHOOK the battery again and basically do the reverse of uninstalling the old switch... one thing to note. there is either a pin from the steering coloum or a pin on the switch that has to be lined up with the shaft in the steering column.. you will see it very plainly.

After typing all this i need to ask you if there is an way you can take a picture of the switch and post it here. the side that goes against the steering column.

Would you please confirm the year of your vehicle. look on the inside of the door on the drivers side for a sticker. it will tell you the date it was made... month and year please.

Get under the hood and disconnect the battery negative terminal lead first.
Now you are safe to access the lock assembly. Try rocking the steering wheel while turning the key to see if it frees. If not then you will need a good DIY mechanic or a specialist to dismantle the whole steering/ignition lock to a bench or workshop. It may be that they can extract the barrel and fit a replacement. If it needs programming to a new key you had better be sitting down when they tell you the cost!!

I need to replace the ignition switch in my car

There is an Ignition switch that is located under the dash. On the other hand if your referring to where the ignition key goes in then this part is called an ignition cylinder. If it is the ignition cylinder (or tumbler) then yes the steering wheel must be removed to replace this and you will need special tools to do it. I would not suggest doing this yourself with no experience as there are lots of small pieces and parts in there. The ingition switch is located under the dash on the steering column and has a wire harness attached to it with numerouse wires. This is replaced by removing 2 small bolts and unplugging it. There is a rod running down the column that goes into a slot on the back side of the ignition switch. It must be placed in the hole where the old old was and then the switch may need adjusting forward or back to properly work.
Hope this helps.

Ignition switch for 2000 jeep grand cherokee is stuck

I'm going to answer this question since I don't know how the security system would affect the lock.
If you can get the key out of the lock, you may want to spray some WD40 or other lube in the slot where the key goes.
If that does not help, you should be able to drop the cover from under the steering wheel and disconnect the switch from the lock cylinder.
If the lock is still stuck, it may have damaged tumblers or something may be jammed with the shifter and steering wheel lock.

Key stuck in ignition -- cannot turn on or off. Can an ignition switch cause the tumbler to lock up? Or does the ignition tumbler need to be replaced? If the ignition tumbler needs to be replaced, how...

lets start simple.get a can of silacone spray oil and spray into the switch and keep moving key and you will find this will reliese the key,if you need to remove the ign switch dont panic as its a simple enough job.Forget about steering wheel and whatever, simply remove the outer plastic cover then this exposes the switch at the back of switch is a plug with wires pull it away ,then below the key you should see a tiny screw undo, and make sure the steering lock is not under pressure,ie steering wheel free, when trying to remove switch move steering wheel back/forward and switch should pull out.good luck.adrian,,,,

I got a problem with my ignition switch. I dont know how to change it

Their is a specal tool you have to get to remove the steering wheel. Then their is a turn signal switch that has to be removed with 3 or 4 screws. this is behind the steering wheel inside the column. After that their is the ignition switch one serew is holding that. remove it and their is a bar that goes in to the end of it, remove this and the ignition switch should fall out.

Please contact me if your problem presists.

Thanks, Charlie
