Question about 1990 Volvo 740

1 Answer

Fuel Delvery 1990 Volvo 740 4cyl, non turbo. I have installed a new in tank fuel pump (one pump system) Everything worked OK for a short while! Now I need to turn the switch on and off several time before I can start it, it needs to warm up some before I drive and when I step on the accelerator it bucks and jerks ( I have to feather the acceleration) until I get to 2000 rpms then kit runs fine.

I have the same issue. I'm going to change the fuel filter and pump this weekend. I've done press reg. already. Car will start, cold mornings very rough, once warm will not take gas below 2000rpm, over 2000, car will drive fairly well, still stumbles a little, but driveable. I've already replaced, ect, fuel press reg., knock sensor, fuel pump relay, map sensor (tested ok) if no better after fuel pump & filter, going to test o2 sensor. Anyone have any other ideas?

You really need to test fuel pressure/did you replace filter under car/you should also replace fuel regulator on top frt of eng./but most likely the fuel pump has moved on the mounting bracket and allowing fuel to leak back into the tank (low pressure)

MY 1991 740 Volvo Regina 4dr non turbo, has had the fuel pump and relay changed and the fuse #11 power wire is dead. Is there a fusible link and if so, can you tell me where it is located? Fuse #1 works...

Fusible links are either by the battery or down by the starter. But if everything else is working, this is not the problem You have a bad connection(pull the fuse and reinsert it or a broken wire). Most wires break close the the plugs.

Change the fuel filter, and ensure the pump(s) are working. Some cars only have one pump in the tank. Others have two, and they are both driven from a relay in the engine compartment. Depending on model and year, this relay may be near the anti-boil overflow bottle, or on the driver's side, near the battery. If you turn the key to ON you should hear a gentle whir for two seconds. If that sound isn't present, the pump or relay is suspect. If it is loud, the pump is failing.
When fuel pumps fail on these cars the car typically will not run when the tank is less than half full. In the case of turbo models, the main pump under the driver's side has to pick up the extra slack. In my experience, it is better to change both pumps when one pump has failed. When the tank pump is noisy, it is failing.
Of course, check the fuses before condemning the pumps. -AS

My 1990 volvo will not start

1) The fuel pump could be dead.
2) The fuel pump relay (LH models it is located on the driver's side), Regina systems it is located on the coolant expansion tank. Test as follows: turn key to ON and listen for a whirring sound. NG, check the fuse, then check the relay by substitution.
3) Inside the car, the fuel injection relay could also be suspect, but unlikely. Again, check by substitution.

Remember that the fuel pump relay can sometimes fail because of the solder joints making it intermittent. Do not attempt to short across it without the pinouts for the relay - it could destroy the computer outputs along with the computer itself.

You should see a brief stream of gas doing the key test - along with a click of the relay as well with the fuel pump filter disconnected. If all tests good, remove the cover (sedan models) and check the connections in the trunk. On wagon models it is accessed by way of the foldout in the trunk area, then remove the inspection cover, if needed.

1988 volvo 740 gle non-turbo loud fuel pump

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter? It is located under the cars center on the left side ..

You will find it alongside the main high pressure fuel pump on a metal support plate held up with 3 bolts.
Remove the 3 bolts with a 10mm socket wrench to lower the plate. Place a catch pan below the filter to catch any leaking fuel.
Be careful not to get fuel in you eyes or running down your arms. Remove the 2 bolts holding the banjo fuel pipe connections to the filter.
Note the direction of the filter.
Loosen the clamp holding the filter to the support plate and slide out the old filter.
Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one and use new copper sealing washers on the banjo connections.

Check the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay first, before replacing the fuel pump. The fuses and relays are behind the the ash tray, The fuses are labelled. The relay is on the left side of the relay rack, closest to the big round bulb out sensor. But before that, how about pouring some gas line anti-freeze or fuel injector cleaner into the tank?
