Question about Mitsubishi Mirage

2 Answers

I have a Mitsubishi Space Star 1.6 mirage man registered 29/09/2001 and have intermittant speedometer failure. Symptoms are, the Needle drops to zero, the milage stops advanving, after a number of repetitions the engine management light comes on. My local garage, has checked everything, put signals into the sspeedometer, checked the speed generator on an osciliscope together with normal continuity checks, but could find nothing wrong, After resetting the EM system very thing seems ok for 300- 400 miles and then the condition presents it self again. Is there a known common fault? Is there a known problem with the Dash board printed Circuit Board? Your help would be much appreciated. Regards A Compton

I asked the questions Is there a known common fault?
Is there a known problem with the Dash board printed Circuit Board?
The reason I did this is to try to estabilish any known likely causes of my reported Speedometer intermitant failure.
You have not answered my questions but have refered me to a vidio that is 'not now available' and a description of how to get behind the Dash of a vechicle that is not a space star.
As a professional engineer I know that replacement of components is a hit and miss affair but I was expecting some help to direct me to a solution, other than to take the vechicle to a competent garage, which I have already done, as intermated in my original Message.
Whilst I appriciate that you can't diagnose all faults, as you advised me to take the vehicle to a garage which I have already done so 3 times now, I'm I entitled to a refund?

Are you wanting a new 1? Or just location?
The location is right behind the steering wheel. That's the speedometer, temp gauge, batt, oil pressure, tach, and fuel gauge.

Two questions: Is your odometer working? If not then it's probably a broken gear by the stepper motor that Emissionwiz mentioned. Is your ABS and/or TRACS light on intermittently or constantly. If so that is a common sign your ABS control module has gone or is going bad. This usually happens before the speedometer starts acting up. Either one of these will start intermittently and finally end up with the speedometer not functioning at all, and both are pretty common failures with this model.

1997 CE Lancer speedometer

i had the same problem on my g/f's 2000 lancer GLXi, (with tacho),
i fixed the problem by putting a jump wire on the back of the instrument cluster,
the fault was in the wiring to the tacho part & i drew up my own wiring diagrams for the cluster unit,
then traced the fault,
looking @ the back of the cluster unit, the top right hand screw for the speedometer,,, follow the track on the circuit-board, there is a link wire UNDER the board (there is a dotted line on top where it goes, i think its the left 1,,, there is 2) this track then goes to the bottom left screw on the tacho,,,
i soldered a small gauge wire from the bottom of the link solder joint (MAKE SURE ITS THE CORRECT LINK, THERE IS 2 SIDE BY SIDE) to the bottom right track on the vertical plug socket (its common pos for the warning lights) this is where the "MIRAGE" & other "CE LANCER" (without tacho) gets its speedometer & gauges power from,

kind regards waz
if anyone needs a photo i will pull out the dash again lol its only 6 screws
