2000 Ford Escape - Battery light

The battery light stays on for a while after starting and sometimes comes back on for a bit while driving. We just replaced the battery thinking that was the problem but it's still happening. Is the next step to replace the alternator (costly)?

I too have begun experiencing that on my 2003 Escape which has 100K
miles. I turn the engine off and restart it and interestingly, the
light goes away. It has happened four times this week. Usually when
the car has been sitting outside for 8 hours.

I was going to buy a new battery this weekend but I think I might wait to see what others say.

  • 958 Answers is the alternator. you don't normally repair alternators there right? it could be a diode problem or a regulator problem.

if you know how to replace the diode assembly in your alternator then you can try and also the IC regulator also could be the bad part.

you may want to check the simplest thing....the belt. if you have loose alternator belt then it could just be that one.( least of all cost )

tnx 4 using fixya,

I have a 2005 ford escape and I broke down on vacation. First the battery light kept coming on and off. Then it finally died. My gauges went off first then it would not go any more. Well, I got that fixed. Bought a new battery and alternator. Got home which was about 7 or 8 hours. Then the battery light came on. I checked the fuses and everything. The only thing bad was fuse # f12 which is a diode. I am not sure what it is but will get it checked tomorrow. The light went off after we moved the bad diode. But I didnt have a spare one so I used anothe one beside it. I am wondering if it was my whole problem.

Hi, help please? Ford escape 3.0 v6 -2001 model Disconnect battery to reset ecu, wait 30 secs - reconnect, engine check light stays off for next journey, turn car off. Start it again and check engine light...

The age of the battery could be a factor. My 2000 Windstar has a history of similar problems - currently on battery number 7. As battery function deteriorates, strange symptoms occur. Check for low or fluctuating voltage level on the instrumentation bus. In my case, I cannot turn on the rear A/C and leave it on overnight or it will kill the battery. You may find some similar malfunction. Try to get access to the factory service bulletins for your Escape as there may be a clue as to something that should have been corrected but wasn't.

I own a 2003 Ford Escape 3.0 L engine 6 cylinder. about a month ago I had a battery problem and replaced my battery. Once I did this, I then started to have a "battery not charging" light on...

Question is, is the light correct ? Check voltage when car is freshly started and headlights ON, and then as it warms up in relation to the light going off. The voltage at battery should be around 14.5 volts or a little more right when you start it, and not drop below 13 volts anytime IF the alternator is doing its job. don-ohio (:^)

I have a 2002 Ford Escape V6. When I first had the car in 2006 the battery light would come on when I would start the car and would stay on for approx.10 mins. My car would always need jump starts. I...

The battery light usually comes on when the alternator is not putting out sufficient voltage equal to or above the battery voltage. Sometimes the alternator can be generating enough voltage to make the light go out but not enough current to recharge the battery properly especially when driving at night with lights etc on. Eventually the battery will not have enough charge left to start the engine. The most common cause of low output is worn brushes but your description tends to suggest that the electronic regulator inside the alternator has an intermittent fault. An auto electrician will be able to diagnose the problem fairly quickly and probably offer to fit an echange unit.

Battery light comes on and stays on...

I was just reading on another forum about the Ford Escape Battery lights staying on. They said it was the overflow reservoir being low. My 2003 Ford Escape XLS battery light has been on for 6 months. I went to autozone last Wednesday and they said my battery was bad. I got it replaced yesterday. Battery light still on.
So tonight after I read the other forum, I figured it would be worth checkng. My reservoir was about 1/2 inch below the full line. I filed it about 1/4 inch above the full line.....lo and behold, the battery light went off when I started the car. How freakin stupid. But there is your answer.

Why would my battery light stay on my 2002 escape

The light indicates that the battery is receiving insufficient charge voltage from the alternator. Take the car to an autoparts store and have the alternator output checked. Most parts stores will do the test for free. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

Battery won't hold charge

My 2002 Ford2.gif Escape had a similar issue later in 2006. My alternator died and I needed replacement. After replacing, the light would come on and off at times. When everything running (i.e. radio2.gif, air conditioner, driving lights) and tocuh electric windows up the power would lower and sometimes battery light on dashboard would come up. Original mechanic could find out what was going on and I lived for 2-3 years with it.

This past August 2009 after a long trip (i.e. 8 hours or so) my battery died. Brought to a auto parts place and they determined it was the baterry and the alternator. Since I was back on my home town I went to a good friend that is a mechanic and he fixed it for real.

He had a similar issue with three different Escapes coming back with alternator or baterry or both death. He found out that Ford has an official report for Escapes that when this happens the electric fan behind the radiator are short circuiting, affect direclty the baterry and alternator killing them, and needs replacement.

Try this and may work for you.
