2002 Ford Taurus Burning rubber smell white smoke from under the hood no oil or coolant leaks 3.0L DOHC

  • Anonymous Nov 14, 2011

couldnt see the last solution due some tech issues with fixya web page

    now i can view

i got a better look at my mothers car .. all of the oil is leaking out underneath just not on the pavement. i got a guy to come out to take a look ...we had no idea its that bad ..but manageable

taking it to his shop this week, he is going to pressure wash all of the oil off the check to see how bad an where the leak or leaks come from. - test drive then make the repairs

we should have a pretty good estimate once he is done

Is there a squealing noise like the pulley may have locked up? Make sure you don't have wiring getting hot.Check all areas near the exhaust and at the firewall area where the EGR piping comes off the exhaust.
Make sure nothing is laying against the exhaust or catalytic converter. don-ohio

    no squealing noises
wiring an fuses was replaced by ford in august

    will check the egr
it was also suggested that i have my ac clutch looked at as well

    ...........

test drove car around the corner.. kept it under 45mph .. while idle little smoke took it home an parked it, smoke visible then dissipates .

under the hood it appears to be coming from the front center

this engine is a bit different than the previous taurus owned before
im just being cautious this time cause the last one i had a 1999 wagon
an in 2006 the engine blew up on me on my way to work --

Okay, you don't have a belt burning, but that IS the area where underneath is the hot exhaust pipe. So you have something burning on that pipe, maybe? You gotta look and see, maybe even use a mirror and flashlight. don-ohio

  • don-ohio Oct 24, 2011

Ummmm....did you mean the front center of the engine or front center of vehicle? I know the engine is turned crossways. don-ohio

  • Anonymous Oct 28, 2011

yep, front - light white smoke comes from around the side near the belt plus the odor is stronger in that area .... similar to a tires spinning on asphalt smell

  • don-ohio Oct 28, 2011

Well,if it's not squealing, it's probably not a pulley resisting a belt.I'm still voting that wiring or rubber of some kind is hitting an exhaust pipe area or manifold. I hope you can find it before it leaves you with a tow truck bill.
I'd make sure and keep a small fire ext6inguisher in the car if you continue to drive it. don-ohio

finally had the chance to take a closer look at my mothers taurus .. got to look under the car and took some pics ... there is oil every where underneath,

i normally do the oil change in both my sis and her car an do visual inspection while changing it .... since i been tied up have not done much ..

will take it to a local shop soon .. going back to the local ford shop wont be a option since the insist there is nothing really wrong the engine

  • don-ohio Nov 01, 2011

Okay,so I got your message in my e-mail, but I don't see that message here. I imagine that the oil underneath is somehow getting onto the exhaust or into a really hot area and the oil is vaporizing into white mist.
UNTIL you fix this leaking, change to a FULL synthetic engine oil(Pennzoil Platinum or Castrol Edge is good. to reduce the chance of a fire, and keep an extinguisher(which all cars should have)handy.
My son owned an older Taurus SHO with a special Mitsubishi engine,I think it was, and it developed BAD leaking from the valve covers which pooled around the spark plugs which were sunken in wells. Bad problem and not real easy to fix,but it must be fixed. (:^) don-ohio

Also,BEFORE you do the oil change, add a bottle of quality(Bars Leaks or Prestone)ENGINE OIL leak sealer to it to soften up the seals. Drive it at least a hundred miles before changing the oil. (:^)don-ohio

Okay...good to hear.....I hope he locates the leak. don-ohio (:^)

White smoke under hood but not over heating. what could this be?

The rubber smell leads me to believe a coolant hose is leaking and getting ready to burst. Better get it fixed immediately!

Come to a stop smoke pours out from underneath the hood

Is it from oil, does it smell like burnt oil or from coolant. Could be a oil leak or coolant. Maybe a belt. Could also be blown water pump

What caused white smoke from exhaust?

Generally, white smoke is engine coolant burning. If it only happened for a few seconds, you may have leaked some on the exhaust pipes.
I would check the engine oil and coolant levels with the engine cold, and then look for coolant leaks.

Every time I come to a stop the 2002 Tarus smells like rubber burning. Had it looked at from several mechanics.

Check to ensure you do not have oil dripping on the exhaust pipe. You will see discoloration from oil burning off. How can you tell it is white smoke by the smell? White vapor is usually water perhaps you have an antifreeze leak. Check your brakes, they can heat up and smell funny. I am sure you have checked the belts by now.

MY 1992 FORD TAURUS IS LEAKING COOLANT or looks like coolant same cooler. leakin from under engine block on left and right it looks like.... and there now is a strong smell of burnt rubber that consistant...

You need to find out exactly where it is leaking out at. If you get that coolant on wires, it can cause all kinds of problems. Check your belt and make sure there is no tears and that it is not sticking. You might have a pulley sticking or something. Raise the hood and start your car, Make sure the belt is acting normal.

2001 ford windstar .Dorman 615-177 kit was installed .It has 350 miles on it since the install but on startup it's blowing white smoke.doesn't stumble ,idles fine and drives fine.Smoke is just brief on...

Valve seal leaks will cause an engine to smoke on start until the oil burns off. If a head gasket were leaking it would be smoking constantly.

My car started smelling funny...pulled over lifted hood and it was steaming...white smoke came from under hood and tail pipe, car would not start again. Some say it may be a head gasket? How would I know?

You can tell by looking at dip stick if the oil has a creamy white substance there is antifreeze getting in oil (blown head gasket) or if ther is excessive white smoke coming from exhaust pipe upon acceleration. steam from under hood may be a coolant leak from a rubber hose or it may be leaking from the cylinder head onto the exhaust manifold also the car will be using up antifreeze.
