My 2002 tbird won't get out ofnpark

If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the RUN position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Insert the key and turn it to OFF. Apply the brake pedal and shift to N
(Neutral). This allows the automatic transmission shift lever to be
moved from the P (Park) position without the brake pedal
depressed.
3. Start the vehicle.
If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift lever,
it is possible that a fuse has blown or the vehicle's brakelamps are not
operating properly.

2002 thunderbird gear shift override button location

There is no "gearshift override button" If the gear shift cannot be moved from PARK whith the key on and the brake pedal depressed, turn the key to the LOCK position and remove the key. Then re-insert the key and turn it one "click" to the OFF position (if the instrument cluster lights up, you turned it too far). The shifter will then be able to move. Place the shifter in NEUTRAL and hold the service brake while starting the engine. The shifter can then be moved to any position desired. If it is placed in PARK, you will have to repeat the procedure to get it going again.

Also, you should check your brake lamps. The shift interlock is probably not working properly due to a problem with your brake lamp circuit.

I have a 2000 mercury cougar and my car key will not come out of the ignition switch! is there a fuse that could have went bad and locked the key into place?

This is an alignment problem with the Gearshift. If you have a trigger in the shifthead, try starting and moving the car into Neutral. Then shift the gearshift into Park and make sure the trigger on the gearshift sets when you put it into Park. Now turn off the car and try removing the key again.

If this does not work for you, there is an interlock switch on the brake pedal lever. Usually this switch will prevent starting if it is out of alignment or broken. But you may have moved it enough to throw the other controls off. If no success, then you may need a new shift cable or adjustment in the shift cable.

My gear shift i stuck in park

You can get it out of park as a temporary fix by popping off the little cover to the left of the gearshift, then pushing down on the lever beneath the cover with a flathead screwdriver (or skinny key) and then shifting out of park.

I can't get my Gear Shift our of Park. The engine

Common problem.

In future, when on put it in park only AFTER the handbrake is applied. Ideally, foot brake, shift to N, apply handbrake, release foot brake, shift to park.

If the incline isn't steep have someone push car uphill while you gently move gearshift shift out of park. If its a steep hill, call a tow truck and move to a level surface. The parking pawl in the transmission becomes groved over time (and sticks) unless you use the handbreak as described.
