No crank no start.  Have been told possible the security system.  How do I bypass the security.

  • karen4361 Sep 23, 2008

Will not crank no spark. Gauges move but engine will not turn. When Start celinoid is jumped engine cranks but no spark, Have checked fuses and relays. Security system?

Had a computer hooked up but no problem codes.  Am thinking that it is the security system as we changed the battery but since the car was open never used the lock/unlock on the remote. It is a black key if that makes a differance.

No crank or crank and no start? There is a difference

Well if the engine does NOTHING AT ALL when you try to start it then there are several things to check, First is the key Grey or Black? Grey is a S.K.I.M. key this is a certain type of security system but...... the security system does ont kill the starter it kills the injectors but the car will still turn over. May start and die in a second after.

If nothing at all happens you have to check the basics first Battery cables clean and secure, Voltage to the starter "S" terminal with the key in the Start position would indicate a bad starter if there IS power at the "S" terminal on the starter when you try to start.

    Does the security light blink?

Does the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED ON?

DOES THE FUEL PUMP OPERATE FOR TWO SECONDS AS SOON AS THE KEY IS TURNED ON?

If it cranks over but will not start try this roll down the window, put the key in the ignition and turn it on and leave it for one (1) hour do not turn it off try to start it this relearns the security system

If no turn it off lock all the doors unlock the passenger door with the key and try to start it if not do this same procedure for all doors one at a time

The lst thing is I ran into this same thing with a 2003 caravan no crank no start nothing at all had to put a new computer and a new security key and have the whole system reprogrammed at the dealer $1200.00 no other way even puting in a new comp will not do it the dealer is the oly option to reprogram this system and the key has a chip in it it is an important part of the security system if car cranks over try a different key this is also a possibility

At this point it looks like you need a scan tool to see if you can communicate with the PCM, Was it a real scan tool or just a code reader? Did it read codes or "no communication"

First try this disconnect the crank sensor its located on the bell housing of the engine behind the engine on the drivers side at the top of the transmission bellhousing, disconnect it and see what changes I have had a big surge of bad ,shorted crank sensors on these vehicles in the past few months. if it needs one only buy the replacement at the dealer nowhere else no matter how cheap

SOURCE: Changing the water pump on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6

WATER PUMP
The water pump is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case/cover.

A gasket is used as a seal between the water pump and timing chain case/cover.

If water pump is replaced because of bearing/shaft damage, or leaking shaft seal, the mechanical cooling fan assembly should also be inspected. Inspect for fatigue cracks, loose blades, or loose rivets that could have resulted from excessive vibration. Replace fan if any of these conditions are found. Also check condition of the thermal viscous fan drive. Refer to Viscous Fan Drive in this group.

The water pump can be removed without discharging the air conditioning system (if equipped)

REMOVAL
Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
Drain cooling system. Refer to Draining Cooling System in this group.
Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse.

The thermal viscous fan drive is attached (threaded) to the water pump hub shaft. Remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from water pump by turning mounting nut counterclockwise as viewed from front. Threads on viscous fan drive are RIGHT HAND. Using special tool spanner wrench 6958 with adapter pins 8346 and a suitable fan wrench loosen the fan drive Viscous Fan and Fan Drive Do not attempt to remove fan/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle at this time.
WARNING: CONSTANT TENSION HOSE CLAMPS ARE USED ON MOST COOLING SYSTEM HOSES. WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING, USE ONLY TOOLS DESIGNED FOR SERVICING THIS TYPE OF CLAMP, SUCH AS SPECIAL CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER 6094) SNAP-ON CLAMP TOOL (NUMBER HPC-20) MAY BE USED FOR LARGER CLAMPS. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING CONSTANT TENSION CLAMPS.

CAUTION: A number or letter is stamped into the tongue of constant tension clamps. If replacement is necessary, use only an original equipment clamp with matching number or letter.

If water pump is being replaced, do not unbolt fan blade assembly from thermal viscous fan drive.
Remove two fan shroud-to-radiator nuts Fan Shroud Mounting Hardware Do not attempt to remove fan shroud at this time.
Remove fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly from vehicle as a complete unit.
After removing fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly, do not place thermal viscous fan drive in horizontal position. If stored horizontally, silicone fluid in viscous fan drive could drain into its bearing assembly and contaminate lubricant.
Remove accessory drive belt as follows: The drive belt is equipped with a spring loaded automatic belt tensioner. Relax tension from belt by rotating tensioner clockwise (as viewed from front) Automatic Belt Tensioner - When all belt tension has been relaxed, remove accessory drive belt.
Remove lower radiator hose clamp and remove lower hose at water pump.
Remove seven water pump mounting bolts and one stud bolt
CAUTION: Do not pry water pump at timing chain case/cover. The machined surfaces may be damaged resulting in leaks.

Remove water pump and gasket. Discard gasket.
INSTALLATION
Clean gasket mating surfaces.
Using a new gasket, position water pump and install mounting bolts as shown. Water Pump Installation - Tighten water pump mounting bolts to 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.) torque.
Spin water pump to be sure that pump impeller does not rub against timing chain case/cover.
Connect radiator lower hose to water pump.
Relax tension from belt tensioner Automatic Belt Tensioner - Install drive belt
CAUTION: When installing the serpentine accessory drive belt, belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. Refer to Belt Routing for correct belt routing. Or, refer to the Belt Routing Label located in the engine compartment. The correct belt with correct length must be used.

Position fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to vehicle as a complete unit.
Be sure the upper and lower portions of the fan shroud are firmly connected. All air must flow through the radiator.
Install two fan shroud-to-radiator nuts Fan Shroud Mounting Hardware
Be sure of at least 25 mm (1.0 inches) between tips of fan blades and fan shroud.
Install fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to water pump shaft.
Fill cooling system. Refer to Refilling the Cooling System in this group.
Connect negative battery cable.
Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks

SOURCE: How to replace headlights on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

One long bolt at the top - requires a 7mm socket to remove the bolt. The light housing will pry out with a screw driver. There are three ball and socket type connectors that hold the housing in and I just pryed off the plastic housing carefully and "balls" pop out of the sockets. Finally, I was replacing the faded plastic housing and it came with a new wiring harness. It's impossible to reach the connector to use the new wiring harness that comes with the new plastic light housing. So just use the existing wiring harness with the new light assembly.

Hopefully this will answer your question.

The redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor. The structure was stiffened by PorscheEngineering for sharper steering and lighter weight. The spare tire wasrelocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor togreat relief of owners. The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by chrysler's first clean sheet V8 since the 60's (SOHC aluminium heads, plastic intake), Chrysler's then-new PowerTech. Although this engine produced less torquethan both previous V8s, it was lighter and got much better fuel economyand provided similar on road performance figures (the 23 gallon fueltank was replaced with one of a 20.5 gallon capacity). The Inline 6engine was also updated in 1999. 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) was added byredesigning the intake manifold. The manual transmission was dropped with this model.
While other Jeep vehicles used the Mopar 5 x 4.5 bolt circle, thiswas the first Jeep following the 1987 Chrysler buyout to receive awider bolt pattern — 5 x 5. The 5 x 5 bolt pattern (also 5 x 127 mm),although common to GM rear wheel drive vehicles and light dutytrucks/vans, has spread beyond its use with GM (and Ford with their 1973 to 1978 LTDs and Lincolns). Chrysler first used the 5 x 5 pattern on full-size half-ton Dodge Ram pickups and Dodge Ramcharger SUVs in 1986.
A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four wheel drive option called Quadra-Drive II.With three viscous clutches, it was one of only a few four wheel drivesystems at the time with triple locking differentals, joining thecontemporary Mercedes Gelandewagen, Mercedes Unimog and Magna SteyrPinzgauer, and the only one of the four with fully automatic operation, although the axle differentials could not be manually locked like inthe other three vehicles.
The 45RFE and 545RFE automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It included three planetary gearsets rather than the two normally used in a four-speed automatic. Thisgave it six theoretical speeds, and it would have been the firstsix-speed transmission ever produced in volume, but it was programmedto only use five of these ratios. Four were used for upshifts, with adifferent second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratioswere used, Chrysler decided to call it a "4-speed automatic". In 2001,the programming was changed to make use of all six ratios. Rather thanhave six forward gears, the transmission was programmed to act as afive-speed with the alternate second gear for downshifts. The RPM at70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE is 2000 rpm, 200 rpm less thanthe 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 model year WJ owners can havetheir 45RFE transmission's programming flashed to enable the extra gearas both transmissions are physically the same. The 42RE 4-speedautomatic remained the transmission for the Inline 6 engine. It was notchanged from the previous model Grand Cherokee's.

SOURCE: how do you change the tps on a 2000 jeep grand 4.7

The exact placement of the throttle position sensor generally is located on the side of the throttle body below the air intake tube on top of the engine.

To replace simply remove the air intake duct (usually one plastic screw), locate the sensor, disconnect wire plug in, remove the two sensor mounting screws (torx screw variety, size not remembered) and the sensor will come off. When replacing be sure to line up the throttle shaft with the proper groove inside the sensor...it should just slip in there pretty easily with a little bit of wiggling. Reinstall doing the reverse of the above.

Take's about 5 - 10 min to replace from start to finish and remember to clean the throttle body before starting this job to ensure no dirt will enter the engine. Good luck, Merry Xmass

How do i replace the crank position sensor on a 2000 jeep grand cherokee

If you have the type of crank angle sensor shown in the image, then it will be located on the bell-housing towards the top of the bell-housing and usually on the drivers side. Dis-connect the faulty crank angle sensor and then un-bolt the two bolts that secure the crank angle sensor to the bell-housing and then remove the sensor. The best access to the crank angle sensor is from under the vehicle.
