Question about 1995 Geo Prizm

95 geo prizm died

My car seemed to be running fine until one day it died in an intersection. The fuel pump and filter was replaced, even trying the distributor ap. Can someone please tell me if there are any common problems with this type of car or if some other step needs to be taken? Would a bad distributor cap cause the car to just die or is it more likely a fuel problem? Please help. Thanks, Theresa

    Thanks. Is that hard to fix? The car was fine and then just died in the middle of an intersection. There are a lot of miles on the car. Are there symptons before a belt goes out? Thought it was the fuel system for sure. I will look in to the timing belt. Thanks so much. Theresa

    I have someone looking at the belt right now and he says that it looks fine. Getting worried.

I can tell you exactly whats wrong with your car.the distutor.they go bad quite often.they cannot be fixed,you have to buy another.you cannot find them in junk yards,so be prepard to spend 300.00 for a rebuilt one.same thing happened to my 94.they are thee most expensive part to replace.

I had a similar problem with mine. The igniter was the solution. In the process I replaced the plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter. It started up just fine afterwards.

The timing belt may be broken.How many miles are on it and when was the timing belt replaced if ever.Timing belts should be replaced at around 60,000 miles.

    If you don't mind busting a few knuckles and saying a few colorful words then its not very hard to do.Be sure to have a repair manual handy so you can line the timing marks correctly.As for symptoms there are none.They seem to like to break when you are accelerating,like taking off from a dead stop.Good luck and please let me know what you find out.

new spark plugs this decade. (a tune up?0
the filter is part of all 60k tuneups. letting it clog wrecks good pumps.
my wild guess, its lack of fuel flow, do to old filter.
or low fuel pressure.
car is identical to a Corolla. so is not unique or rare as some Geo cars are.
the cam belt not changes, invites valve kissing piston tops. BOOM

The map sensor , is what measure air flow and the ECU matches fuel to this air flow.
my guess, is it does that, but fuel pressure is like 15PSI, bad.

Won't start, but after sitting a day or two It starts right up.


check fuel pressure could have clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump.

Replaced fuel pump in 1995 geo prizm, now it is flooding.


this is actually a toytal engine, but they had 2 , 1.6L and 1.8L>
which is yours. but I answer in generic form, EFI.
ever do a full 60k mile service on that engine.?
that white smoke is a bad sign.

95 geo prizm wont start


wont crank or will not start.? 2 unique things. no crank always results in , no start (unless you push start the car)
hot wiring the fuel pump relay or any relay in the EFI system , invites
blowing the ECU to kingdom come, bad to the bone that.
I fixed them for 50 years. (electronics controls, so know it !)
you do know its really a toyota right?
what ENGINE? each works different.

does car start with test fuel and run, until the fuel runs out.
do you have fuel pressure, while reading the FSM , way of doing it.
some cars only make fuel pressure, cranking and runing.
other make pressure, for 3 seconds key on, and cranking and running only, and all cars drop pump and injections when ECU sees spark die.
that is why stating which Toyota engine YOU HAVE, helps with diagnosis. and please stop hot wiring your car and learn to use a voltmeter. Ive seen $3000 ECU blown up do to bad mechanics.

I would start with the fuel pump fuse. If that is good, then have someone sit behind your car and you turn the key to the accessory position. When you do that your friend should here a humming sound comming from the gas tank. That means that the pump is working and pressurizing the fuel lines to your injectors to start the car. If the pump is working check your fuel filter, it seems like that maybe your problem. Over time dirt and debris get mixed with your fuel from the gas tank and get trapped in the fuel filter and slowly stops flow for the fuel to get through the filter. Hope this helps.

Have a 95 GEO prizm 72k miles been running great until last week the engine seemed to sputter a bit losing power. This has happened three times but the car returned to running normal. Now the will crank...


i suspect that you need a timing belt. you will also need to find out if this engine is a interferance engine if so you can do damage to valves by trying to turn it over.

I think it is under your rear seat cushion. Remove the rear seat cushion, you'll see the gas tank cover.

1993 Geo Prizm is turning into a money pit. now it has an exhaust leak. It also sputters through all gears at the start. Could this be due to thw exhast leak or a bad fuel pump???


I don't think an exhaust leak would cause the sputtering in all gears. I've run my Geo in the past with a cracked exhaust manifold for months, and it ran fine, just a bit louder. Are your spark plugs & wires in good shape (missing vs sputtering)? Also check inside the distributor cap for corrosion/carbon build up. If all that is ok, then I would start with the basics: first try running a complete fuel system cleaner through it for the next two tanks, that should clear any partially clogged fuel injectors. If no luck, then replace the fuel filter, and try it, if it still sputters you can check the fuel pump strainer if it looks ok, then you might want to replace the fuel pump.
