Engine Runs Rough At Low Idle When Cold

I have an V-6 SOHC. In cooler temperatures it has a low and rough idle like the computer thinks it's already warmed up. I have changed the temperature sending unit to the computer, but to no avail. In the warm months it warms up and runs fine.

Cold start injector is bad, most likely.

The most likely cause is a dilution of the fuel/ air mixture caused by a vacumn leak. check for a hissing sound near the top center of the engine.

Is the problem just at idle. Your IAC (idle air control) may be bad. Go to autozone.com to pull up a picture and location of it on your vehicle. You can also unplug this to see if your idle levels out.

If it goes down the road OK, no. It's not your fuel pump. Does it need a tune up? Bad EGR valve? Lousey gas?

start with the old compresion check jack um could be anything burt piston rings to timing being off i would suggest a complete tune up then compression check then if thats ok start checking voltage outputs of the coil/paks and ignition and emmisions controls sensors ect......

check the the fuel pressure regulator

could also be sticking egr valve or egr solenoid

carbon chunk lodged between valve and seat on egr valve

thanks.

Hi,

A remote possibility, vacuum leak. The leak would not be in any of the hoses and tubes, otherwise it will be apparent on both cold and warm engine. As said remote possibility, intake manifold/gasket. When just started col and idling rough, spray carb/injector cleaner on the junction of the intake manifold and the cylinder head, if idling shoots up, leak is verified. Alternately, and pls bear with me, check how the replacement K & N air filter seats on the air filter housing. A temporary test would be to place a sponge like material/foam over the K & N and determine if it will affect the idle hot or cold.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

There are 3 things that cause an engine to run hot;
1) Lack of coolant
A) Broken fan belt
B) Any obstruction to air flow, rags in the fan or vents
2) Ignition timing too far advanced
3) Too lean a fuel mixture.

I'd run some fuel injector cleaner through it. Sounds like it may be choking just enough to cause the increased airflow from the colder temperatures to improperly mix giving it a rough idle. It'll think it's running the right ratio of fuel, but really just choking itself out with air.

I'd try fuel cleaner, and new fuel/air filter. See where that leads you. It could be a simple vacuum leak or even a pcv valve giving you some small problems. I hope this helps bud.

Buy yourself a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze and add them to your fuel... add one each time you fill up.... it's likely water in your gas... lots of condensation this time of year.

Remove the idle speed control airbypass valve (located near the throttle cable and air inlet, round 2 wires going to it) and clean it, they get full of sludge, I am a Ford Tech and we see this issue all the time, also wipe out the throttle valve in the intake with a soft cloth to remove any residue around it.

Have you checked the thermostat to make sure the engine reaches proper operating temp?? Have you checked for upper intake leaks with a can of carb spray? Do those 2 things. I am a retired Ford dealer tech and these items where always the things I checked, and most times found a problem.

A/c doesn't work, temp gauge doesn't work, speedometer doesn't work until it gets to 30 mph, and rough idle in the mornings. could all this be the result of a bad computer?

Very unlikely that it would be a computer problem, it does not control the A/C, or temp gauge. Sounds like multiple problems. A/C could be just low on Freon, if pressure is low, it will not turn on. Temp gauge and rough idle may be related, if temp sensor is bad, the computer wont know the engine temperature and thus not mix the fuel correctly. But there are many things that can cause rough cold engine idle, like dirty throttle plate, or bad idle air control valve. You did not say what engine you have, so this is just general information.
