How to change flasher unit 0n 2002 Saturn L-series

WARNING The flasher unit for turn signals should not be switched with a flasher unit for the hazard lights. To check the filaments of all of the turn signal bulbs and the brake lights, turn on the hazard flashers and walk around the car.
A flasher can be located in the fuse panel, under the dash in the wiring loom, in a glove box, under the hood, or somewhere else.
f36-02.jpg A fuse panel. Most flashers are located under the dashboard on the driver's side. When working properly, a flasher is easy to locate because it makes a ticking sound. When it is not functioning, a service manual may be needed to help locate it. Lighting company catalogs generally have pages listing the location of flashers.
To replace a flasher:
  • A flasher features two or three prongs that plug into a socket.
  • Just pull the flasher out of the socket and replace it with a new one.

Brake lights and turn signal don't work???

turn on the emergency flashers(e-flashers)if they work check the bulbs at the same time.if this is good then check the fuses.you may have a problem with the turn signal flasher needing replacing.this is a different flasher than that of the e-flasher,looks the same but a different flasher.usually located on or around the fuse panel under the dash.the brake light problem could be a misadjusted switch or a bad switch.the switch is at the base of the brake pedal and has two wires to it.one wire will have power all the time and the other wire will only have power on it when the brake pedal is pushed.if not then the switch will need replacing.check for broken wires at the switch as these sometimes break causing a problem.

Cant get right and left signals to work, tried every thing I can think of.

if all the bulbs are working and the fuse is good then turn on the hazard flashers and check to see if it was this flasher you changed or not.if it was then you need to find the signal flasher as this is a different unit and looks like the hazard flasher.you may have replaced the wrong flasher unit.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. The turn signals work sometimes and then they don't work. The 4 way flashers seem to work fine and all of the bulbs are working. Could it be the flasher relay that is bad?

yes, could be going bad ,if its both the left and right it could also be the signal itself, always good to have a spray can of electrical parts wash handy .to clean contacts. auto parts store carries several brands run 9$ to about 14$ you dont need to drench it just a little shot and let dry

Where would I find the turn signal flasher

Check your bulbs before changing your flasher. If your blinkers are binking very fast it could well be a burn out front bulb or if not at all a burned out rear bulb.
The turn signal flasher is usually mounted in the fuse box, it's usually a small round metal canister or a black or yellow plastic cube. Your 4-way flasher should be the same, if your 4-ways are working you can swap out the flasher until you can get a new one.
These should be marked in the fuse box but the abreviations may be hard to understand.
The fuse box(es) are usually mounted in one or more of the following locations;
1) drivers side under the dash or side wall
2) passeger side under the dash side wall
3) in the glove compartment
4) in a covered box under the hood along the side wall.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more specific about the fuse box location but I haven't worked on a Sunfire in years.

Flasher location

I believe the hazard/flasher relay is located under/left of the dash . I think if you remove the under panel under the steering column it should be attached to the BCM bracket under the dash on the left side.

Remove the left instrument panel (IP) insulator.
Remove the steering column filler panel.
Slide the hazard and turn signal flasher to the right, releasing the tabs from the Body Control Module (BCM) bracket.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the hazard and turn signal flasher.

Hope this helps.....
