It most of the time shifts fine when I first start out, and sometimes the "check engine" light will not be on. But it seems that after the engine gets warm (a few miles) it will, on it's own, down shift into 2nd gear and the engine light will come back on. I can at that time turn the key off and back on and at first the transmission will shift back to 3rd and sometimes stay in the proper gear but most of the time it repeat what I described before. I've noticed an rpm change just before it happens. I would describe it as a vacuum discharge or leak problem. Please help me!
Your shifts correctly, as your driving it downshifts and stay stuck at that gear when u stop and try to take off but intell u turn off your car and restart it it shifts correctly intell a few mins later. i am thinking that is a speed sensor (out signal problem) mounted on top of your transmission next to the battery tray, you will see couple of cable linkages next to it ...

I'm not that user, but go to Autozone and have them scan your computer for the code to your check engine light. It will point you to which sensor to replace, as this is likely your culprit. There are two speed sensors which are critical to transmission shifting on this car. The one I'm familiar with is on the passenger drive axle, but when mine went out (I have a 2001 Elantra as well) I didn't have any of these issues you describe. I don't know where the other sensor is, but that's where I'd suggest starting. Get it fixed quickly though, the web-boards I've read warn that these symptoms can be pretty ******* this little transmission. Good luck!
hi from uk may i suggest you recheck battery terminal leads are clean/secure? then check the negative lead from battery where it connects at the other end to the engine usually at point where engine and transmission connet? ensure this connection is also clean/secure ? also you may try this? turn engine manually by crankshaftpully half a turn if it starts ok ? without click ? you may have a bad spot of teeth at some point on ring gear on flywheel? and now and again engine stops at the point thatstarter locks on bad teeth and does not rotate hence the click ? by turning engine half turn will clear teth from starter pinion ?you may even hear/feel starter pinion free itself ?
NEED check engine light code. just shooting in the dark, but it could be your throttle position sensor or the gear indicator (some times called neutral safety switch). to try and reset it (works on some models) when its doing this (giving you grief). pull over to the side of the road when safe and shut off the car (put in park) then press the accelerator all the way to the floor for 30 seconds. then start the car (take foot off of accelerator first) might cure the problem. engine error code would be most helpfull
(1) No need to know if engine block coolant drain plug was available. Once the water pump was removed, all engine block coolant was drained. (2) After removing the three engine mounting bracket bolts, I also removed the mount bracket from the the body and made enough room to replace the timing belt easier.
weeeeiiirrdddd. i have a 2001 hyundia elentra gls, and my third cylinder is misfiring as well. my car also revs constantly on idle and in between shifting. it will flutter between 2-3000 or it will just stay at 5000. i replaced my plugs and wires to no fix with my cylinder. autozone also told me that it sounds like my throttle position sensor needs replaced, but every part they try to sell me will not fit and they swear up and down this is the right part...
