Question about 1993 Suzuki Sidekick

No spark at times engine runs well and stops intermitnt

    when the engine is warm, it bucks and sometimes turns off. I wait half an hour and then its fine.

Check to see if you are getting spark to the spark plugs. Pull a plug wire and insert a long thin scredriver into the wire. Crank the engine (a helper is needed) a hold the screwdriver close 1/8' to the engine and watch for spark. If non make sure that cam belt is not broken and then suspect the little transistor on top of the coil. Find a good dused one, new are $$$.

unfortunately spark plugs do not come with a supply of sparks
so run the fault codes to find out what is stopping the ignition system from working
could be crank/ cam position sensors , broken timing belt / chain

My truck doesn't start, I have pressure in the fuel lines and also spark

You may want to check the ignition module or the coil pack(s) for the spark issue. How are you checking for spark? The parts house has a very cheap tool to check for spark. It connects to the plug wire and the other end connects to the plug which does not have to be removed from the engine. Have someone turn the engine over and the clear window will register a light if you have spark. You may not have fuel pressure because you cannot start the truck. I am assuming with no spark you do not have a running engine, which may be causing a no fuel pressure issue. Do you have a mechanical fuel pump or an electric? Fuel pressure issue can be figured based on the last question I posed to you.Hopefully answering the questions I am asking and the directions towards spark issues will fix your problem.

When an engine stops running it is either lacking spark (at the right time), fuel, or compression. When in your situation, I first check for spark by removing a plug wire and (while the engine is cranking over), watching for an ark (or spark). The spark should be blue/white not yellow/orange.

If no spark, repost your findings here. There are a few items of concern in the distributer that may need to be checked such as the distributer cap, ignition coil, rotor, and the ignition module. Also locate your pickup coil inside the distributer (beneath the rotor) and check for broken wires. Also inspect the reluctor wheel for cracks in the magnetic portion of the star shaped area.

If you have spark, use a timing light and check to see if it is firing at the correct time. See your tune up data for correct specs on ignition timing. (I think it may be at Top Dead Center.)

If you have Good Spark, and it is in time, try priming the engine by adding a small splash of fuel down the throttle body/carb/intake system.

If adding fuel causes the engine to fire and actually run ok for a short period of time, then look deeper into the fuel delivery system. Start by checking the fuel pressure, fuel pump, fuel filter, regulator, pump fuse /relay etc.

If after adding fuel it still does not start, check the cylinder compression to rule out any more complex mechanical problems.

Died going down the road, have gas and spark, but wont start now.

For an engine to run, you need three things to happen inside the engine, compression, fuel and ignition, without any one of these components the engine will not run.
  • Compression - Engine compression caused by crankshaft rotation and pistons moving up and down inside the engine block. If the timing belt or timing chain fails it will cause the camshaft to become out of correlation with the crankshaft or allow the camshaft to stop rotating. Either of these conditions will cause the engine to lose compression and sometimes cause internal engine damage.
  • Fuel Delivery System - The fuel system includes: fuel pump, fuel injectors, pressure regulator, fuel filter and pressure lines. This system is used to supply fuel under pressure to the fuel injection system, the lack of fuel pressure or volume will cause the fuel delivery system to fail and the engine to stall or not start.
  • Ignition Spark Delivery System - The ignition system components include: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor (if applicable), crankshaft angle sensor, camshaft angle sensor, ignition coil, ignition module, knock sensor and ECM (engine control module). The engine relies on the ignition spark to be delivered to the combustion camber at the correct time. If the ignition spark stops or is delivered at the wrong time the engine will not run or run poorly.
If Your Engine Cranks but Does Not Start Follow this Troubleshooting Guide
Most vehicles operate by the same principle; basic troubleshooting procedures apply to most cars.
  • Step 1: Anytime you have a problem with electronically controlled components such as an engine, transmission, ABS brake, or SRS (supplemental restraint system, Air Bag) inspect all fuses using a test light and check the under hood power distribution center and under dash fuse panels. If all fuses test ok continue to the next step.
  • Step 2: To check for problems with electronically controlled components such as an engine, transmission, ABS brake, or SRS (supplemental restraint system, Air Bag ) and the fuses test ok a trouble code scan is needed to identify any system trouble. Use a simple scanner tool to retrieve trouble codes and see if they relate to the specific problem, like a crank angle sensor failure code. If the trouble code present does not pertain to the immediate problem like an EVAP code ignore it until a later time, after the car is running. The reason we repair non-related codes after the engine is running is because sometime false codes can be triggered by the engine not running. Once the engine is running again the code present might cycle and turn itself off. You might say "if the engine doesn't run shouldn't it have a trouble code?" Sometimes conditions occur that will not be detected by the computer, example: if the fuel pump fails the computer cannot detect the failure, so the engine doesn't start and the computer thinks everything is ok with no codes. If no trouble codes are present proceed to the next step.
  • Step 3: The spark plugs in your engine are used to ignite the compressed fuel air mixture. If the condition of the spark plugs are fouled by excessive fuel or carbon the engine will not start, backfire or run rough. Remove all spark plugs to inspect their condition. My 2000 jimmy stop running. i have fuel presure, spark plug wires have spark. I replace both crank, cam, ignition modual sensor and the ecu. Also took of the mufler tinking it may be plug. Engine turns...

yeah, check the order of the spark plug wires on the distributor cap. Perhaps they might be mixed up not allowing it to run properly and yes, even sometimes stall. check that first if not, then check to see if you are getting fuel at the engine. If not then perhaps its a bad fuel pump...good luck!

1.try checking the clearance in the spark plug if you have insufficient or more clearance you wont get spark check this.
2.check the wire coming to the spark plug.if power is not coming to spark plug there wil be discontinuity in the wire try replace it.

My 1986 Chevy S-10 Blazer stopped running while i driving

If your engine timing is good, (meaning the cam is timed to the crank, and distributor) and you have spark and fuel, your engine will run. Try a compression test, and back up and re-test fuel and spark. Make sure the spark works with a HEI spark tester. (Coils can go bad and give a weak spark)
