Have a 2006 F-150 with only 23,000 on it. Driving down the road and clunk!
Sounded like my tailpipe fell off and hit the road. Then metal to metal sound
of grinding. Stays on while driving then I stop and it stops. Nothing for another 20 miles, then all of a sudden grinding ..no one can find the problem.
Brakes and rotors are ok...Of course it NEVER happens when the mechanic
    is riding in it!

I have a 2008 Ford F150 STX and it only has 8000 miles on it and I am having the same problem with the grinding in the front drivers side tire area. It happens when I first start to drive then it clunks just before I come to a complete stop. I had it at the dealership yesterday and they replaced the 4x4 motor they said it had a short in it and the 4x4 was engaging while driving. I picked it up when they said they fixed it and as soon as I drove off the lot it happened again. It will be back at the dealership today for try number 2 but you can imagine the frustration with a brand new truck acting like this. If anyone finds out what the problem is could you let me know. THANKS

I have the same problem in my GMC Jimmy blazer. The sound begins when I start doing 65 on the highway, then I let up on the gas and it gets louder..when I proceed to stop, a big "clunk" then the sound goes away until next time. Did anyone find a solution to this? Mechanics I've taken it to thinks it could be my transfer case.

**** me off! 2008 FX4, 14k miles, the grinding from the front end is random, and very loud, lasting until I come to almost a complete stop. It happened six or seven times in a two week period. The dealer replaced a bearing retainer ring the first time. That wasn't it. Ford sent out a notice that a bearing retaining ring may be an issue on all F150s so they just replaced it without looking for other problems. On the second try the dealer kept my truck for two days, put 150 miles on it, and used a half tank of gas. Then told me they couldn't duplicate the noise so they can't do any type of repair. As it stands now they want my truck for three more days. I would like to figure out the problem before I give the truck back to the dealer so they will stop messing with my truck.

I have 2005 STX and HAD the same grinding noise. When my tire and wheel flopped off I found the rotor assembly hub housing completely broke into just behind the rotor. Evidently it had been cracked for awhile causung the grinding. I replaced the rotor assembly and so far no more grinding. And by the way, I had the rotor's checked several times prior to this incident. The rotor assembly would need to be removed and the rear side inspected in order to find the crack.

I had this problem in my 2005 F-150 twice! The first time was covered under the warranty and the second time was out of my pocket! ( close to $500.00!) There is a solodoid u[pp on the firewall that gets water into it then it corrodes the lines and such. Ford dealership replaced 2 valve assemblies, 2 actuator assemblies, and the IWE Solonoid to fix mine. They claim the problem will not come back but that remains to be seen.

2005 dodge ram 2500 4x4....getting an intermittent grinding noise while driving in the front of truck..possible front differential..;....chrisdawe@comcast.net

Hi,
your description is a little generic, however, that is what we shall work on.
Is the grinding apparent whether the 4X4 is engaged or just in 4X2 mode? On left lock or right lock?

Best thing would be to put the front end on axle stands and start checking. Check the front wheel station on each side by trying to rock it top and bottom. Rotate each wheel and check for noise. When doing this check, listen for any noise emanating from the actual drive shafts to the hubs.

Drain the front differential and check the drained oil for metal shavings etc. To be honest, "grinding" noises usually are accompanied by damaged parts. It's just a question of checking each item in turn. Also check the front prop / Drive shaft for UJ's that are dry and thus will make noise. Also include the sliding spline in your check, again, if it's dry it will be noisy, and it could be intermittent.

4X4's need to have the front ends greased on a regular and generous basis.
You did not mention if you had hublocks fitted, which would be another check to carry out.

Good luck.

Hello i would check your wheel bearings or sometimes called bearing hub .Jack car up prop the car with axle stands now remove your tires and rotors once removed wiggle you bearing hub left to the right your bearing hub should have minimal play one side to the other is obvious the looser play hub will be your noise you have been experiencing.most people call this road noise.

2004 stx f150 right front wheel grinding noise,

I agree with duane_wong on this one ( not like he was looking for my approval :) ), it sounds like a problem with the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) on that side.
Quick test, when you are in 4H ( or 4L ) does the noise still happen ?
I would say cracked vacuum line to the IWE, or a problem with the vacuum diaphragm in the IWE. You can test by having the motor running in park, and in 2H, and check the vacuum line at the IWE for vacuum. Make sure you test to the vacuum line, not the vent line ( ends in the engine compartment, not hooked to anything )

This is a block diagram of the IWE vacuum system

Auto locks for front 4x4 2007 f150 cant stop grinding noise

Are you under warranty? Make it the dealers problem if its eligible.

If the front hubs are grinding regardless of being in 2wheel or 4wheel drive it can be the hub bearings which turn regardless. If it grinds only when in 4x4 then the wheel shafts or differential or front driveshaft or transfer case is making the noise because all of these parts move when in 4wheel drive.
