DTC PARAMETERS Perform these test to find the cause
DTC 26 is set when the PCM has detected the following conditions for more than four seconds twice per ignition cycle.

    • Engine speed greater than 908 rpm.
    • Turbine speed is between 224 and 2800 rpm.
    • TCC is commanded to release for more than 0.25 seconds.
    • Load value (engine torque) is greater than 100.
    • Speed delta (engine speed - turbine speed) across torque converter is less than 84 rpm.

Numbered steps below refer to numbered steps on chart.

    1. Check for information flags 79, 93, or 96. They must be eliminated first as a possible cause of DTC26.
    2. Check actuator operation. Use actuator quick check. The actuator quick test will Pulse Width Modulate (PWM) the actuators at a set rate. Listen and compare the noise of TCC gear actuator to that of other actuators. The noise of all should be similar.
    3. The TCC release circuit may be leaking at the seal ring on the input shaft. This would allow release pressure to leak off to converter out circuit or lube circuit. Also a remote possibility is the ball pressed into the input shaft is loose.

    • When the PCM detects a fault in the circuit (open ground, short), the PCM will open the circuit internally to protect the circuit.
    • On 1992 2nd design, 1993 and 1994 vehicles, the TCC may be detected as stuck on when the transaxle is put into drive range. If TCC is stuck on at start-up, a stall may occur, and after a restart it will result in a 3rd or 4th gear start.

That code is your egr valve or your egr solenoid.sometimes you can remove valve and clean thoroughly with brake cleaner for a cherap alternative.

I had this [problem. Tried the changing the EGR, the selenoid, after hours of looking it was a bad coolant fan motor pulling too many ohms and eventually blew the 30 amp maxifuse.

Code 26 is a soft fault code. You need to replace the egr solinoid and the ccp solinoid. The egr is on the valve cover, the ccp is on the back side of the block, under #3 intake runner.

Valve slash and clearance adjustments should only be performed by certified mechanics and is not a job for the garage or novice hands on type.
If you still decide to proceed, I suggest you get your hands on a maintenance manual which will list the procedure step by step, including proper torque values.

SOURCE: have 95 saturn sl with code 26 and 27 quad driver

well the quad driver may not be at fualt and most likely is not.

there is a fualt line that the computer uses to monitor for fualts but the thing is one line monitors four different things and the code is to get you in the general area but not to the exact fualt. so from here you need to test for failed components. that code and the quad driver monitors the a/c , evap solniod , egr solenoid and coolant fan relay. the fan relay and egr are the most common i see all the time. and with you having an isssue with that coolant light i want to say check the fan circuit.

let me know if you have more question thank you and good luck

It's a 1995 Saturn sl the clutch on ac compressor kicks on with direct power the engine fan also changed relays still get the code 26 quad drive modal need some help

This info is from 1998 Saturn Sl , my service info doesn't go to 95 . It's the same except for code numbers , My info is P0xxx #'s . The quad driver is part of the ECM - engine computer !
Here is a description from Saturn service info .
A quad driver module (QDM) is an electronic switch which completes a ground circuit when switching ON. The QDM independently controls 4 separate outputs. A load is connected between battery voltage and the QDM allowing the QDM driver to control the output. Each QDM has fault detection logic which compares QDM driver input and output voltages. The logic expects to measure less than 3 volts when the QDM driver is ON and greater than 7 volts when OFF. The QDM has only one fault line that will detect a fault on any of the 4 outputs. The scan tool can be used to cycle the outputs ON or OFF. The scan tool can also perform an automated test which can isolate the faulty circuit.
The quad drive it self may be bad , GM had a problem with these !
Did you check fuse's ?
Conditions for Setting the DTC
DTC P01650 and/or P1651 will set if:
There is an open, short to ground or short to voltage on any of the QDM output circuits

MIL (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) telltale circuit

Upshift lamp circuit

Cooling fan relay circuit

A/C relay circuit

Fault detected for 5 seconds for DTC P1651. Fault detected for 20 seconds for DTC P1650.

Important: The QDM circuit is continuously checked when the engine is running.

I think i need to replace the crankshaft sensor on my 1992 grand am but i cant find it an im not sure if it'll fix it,it started off idling really odd like it was going to d I e first only in park

it could be misfiring, where did you get those codes? but the Crankshaft Position Sensor should be somewhere between the intake manifold and the firewall. The Quad Drive is electronics related, supposedly the most common cause of this code is the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation) and should be near the cylinder heads and are also said to be easy to replace. Quad Driver A module monitors the low speed fan, Evap canister purge solonoid, the HIGH TEMP light, and TCC apply. Quad Driver B module covers the shift solonoids and EGR valve.

What is code 26

I'm sure the website cited will be of help. The infamous code 26 quad driver comes up pretty frequently on the Saturn Mailing List. One of the better technical explanations for pre-OBDII Saturns has been quoted several times. Here is the message, edited somewhat:

Pretty vague, isn't it?

First of all, don't panic. Usually, this is not a serious
problem. Let me explain.

Code 26 is a *very common* SES indication to get with a Saturn that
has a few years on it. Most of the solutions, luckily, are not costly.
However, this may depend on the year of your car.

The "Quad Driver" is a device in the computer that "drives" electro-
mechanical devices in the car. Computers run with very little current
(milliamps or microamps) in their circuits. But the devices that
turn on your cooling fan, bulbs, or emissions relays may require
current in a higher range, say tenths of an amp.

Thus, the computer can't talk very well with such a high current
device. It needs help, and it gets in in the form of this Quad Driver
device. The computer sends a signal (very low amps) to the driver, and
it in turn then signals the electromechanical device to do whatever it
needs to do with a higher current which that device can use.

It sort of "drives" the device by remote control.

Code 26
OK, fine, that is the theory. So why the code 26? Well, in almost all
cases, the actual driver device does not fail. What fails is one of
the electro-mechanical devices attached to it. The way the SES light
works, it will come on when either one of the driven devices fails or
if the driver itself fails.

The good news is it is usually not the costly driver device. The bad
news is this is called a "QUAD" driver. That means it drives four
devices. Even worse, there are usually TWO quad drivers, so you have
a total of EIGHT devices to check for just this one SES light.

That's right, code 26 means that one of 8 devices (and a 9th, the driver
itself), could cause the problem. You have to check 8 different things.

Probable causes
I don't have my manual here, but I'll try to remember to post the
exact devices to check. The following is from memory, so bear with me.
Also, remember my car is a '91, so this may have changed somewhat in
following years.

The QD generally drives things like relays, solenoids and light bulbs.
There are a few things that are easy to check, like the bulbs and

The SES bulb and (I think) "HOT" bulb are driven by this device. You
should check that they both come on when you put the car to "on" before
starting. Of course, the SES must work, since it came on for you.

Then the A/C relay and Cooling fan relay are driven. For A/C, simply
check that your A/C works OK. The relay is pretty silent, unlike
some cars, so you can't always hear it click. Just make sure it works.
The cooling fan can be checked when you sucked out the code. Since you
know how to get the code, you should have noticed that the FAN comes
on for a while before getting the code out. (The bulbs also light.)
If the fan isn't coming on, check the relay. The Haynes manual probably
tells you exactly when the fan comes on during the procedure.
The relay is accessible in the under-hood fuse block.

After that, it gets tougher. You have to check some emissions solenoids.
From what I've read, the MOST COMMON cause of code 26 is either the
EGR solenoid or the canister purge solenoid. The EGR solenoid is
real easy to access. It sits right above the EGR valve and takes a minute
to disconnect on Sx2 models. The canister purge solenoid is a pain.
It is attached to the block on the firewall side. You have to take it
out blindly by putting your hand through a small "hole" between all the
hoses and wires.

I forgot what else is controlled by this device. I'll try to get
my manual tonight to look.

I had an SES light last spring. In my case, I guessed wrong.

I narrowed my SES last year down to the CPS or the EGRS, and incorrectly
deduced the CPS. What a pain to replace this. But I was wrong. That
wasted $20. My problem was the EGRS, and it was also a $20 part. Very
easy to replace.

I should mention that my symptoms were opposite of yours. Mine would
come on only while driving for a while, then go off when I stopped.
I should also mention that the CPS and EGRS are common causes of
code 26, and the irony is they are both Nippondenso parts, made in
Japan. How ironic!

Either way, if you take it for service, the Saturn diagnostic computer
should be able to discern between the two or any other device that
is causing this code. They can read more information than we can
by just pulsing out codes.

So, depending on your skill and your luck, you may or may not want to
try this. Like I said, most of the them are easy, thus even if Saturn
service does it, it usually is not costly.

And a followup:

==== Quote On ====
This is a follow up to yesterday's post about a "quad driver" fault.

Yesterday I mentioned the causes for a "code 26" fault with the
SES light. There I detailed the following causes:

1) SES light burned out
2) "HOT" light burned out
3) A/C relay
4) Coolant fan relay
5) EGR solenoid
6) Canister purge solenoid

I couldn't remember the other two causes. Remember, the "quad" in
the driver means it controls 4 outputs. Since there are 2 QDMs,
they control 8 outputs.

The other missing items to check are:

7) Speedometer output
8) Upshift/Shift to D2 bulb

Hope this helps. As you can see, most items are easy to
check except for the solenoids. These can be checked by
measuring their resistance.
