Believe it or not, you have a fuse for ENGINE. Check it, and change it if necessary. It sounds crazy, I know! :-]

SOURCE: I have a 1989 Ford Festiva, when I start it, my

It is a combinatioin of a choke problem...and settings called idle air mixture screw........the choke is adjusted too high.....(increasing the amount of fuel entering the engine)...and then it leans out (not enough fuel) for idle.........i would suggest that you take it to a mechanic who "tunes" carburettors...a sprecialist so to speak, as it is a dying art...or take it to the dealership.........this would be a last option......beacuse it does not have a computer...its a case of listening and observing what the engine does and how it behaves as the screws are adjusted.......so it would be nearly impossible for me or anytone to be able to do it over a medium like this.......

89 ford festiva. Runs and Idles stalls when gas pedal is depressed

The two most likely causes are low fuel pressure because of a faulty fuel pump or filter, or a faulty throttle position sensor.

1989 ford stalls when idling ,runs rough at idle

Check for any trouble codes in the engine computer, and have the fuel pressure tested. If it is throttle body injection. observe the spray pattern of the injector when it pulses. You should see a cone pattern of the fuel spraying down into the intake. If it drips, or appears anemic, the injector might be partially clogged. Try some injector cleaner in the gas tank.

I have a 1989 Ford Festiva. When I turn the head lights on the carburetor accelerates and when I turn them off it goes back to normal. The ground cable from the battery I can see is attached to the car....

first off a carburetor does not accelerate and the ground cable from the battery shoukd attach to both the frame and the motor (chassis ground). the extra load on your alternator may trip a sensor somewhere to speed up the engine rpm. your a/c button does the same thing. if the rpms exceed 1000 during idle you may have a bad regulator in your alternator.

I have a 1989 Ford Festiva, when I start it, my idle is very high. Then when I push on the gas pedal, the idle goes way down and stales out. Is this a choke problem?

Need to know how to adjust valves on 1989 ford festiva l

They are self adjusting. There should be hydraulic lash adjusters. Just tighten down the camshaft and start it. If you installed new lifters, they need to be soaked in oil before installing or they will be full of air and the car probably won't start. Hope this is what you were looking for.

Idle is very very High

Check under the hood for any small vacuum hoses that are broken or disconnected. You will find a lot of small hoses! Most high idle problems are the result of a vacuum leak. Try idling the engine and spray short bursts of WD40 in different areas under the hood. If the engine idles lower when the stuff is sprayed in an area, that is more than likely where your leak is. Don't go overboard with the WD40, just short bursts.

91 ford festiva engine prob.

Hi there. First make sure that your engine is idling fast enough. If the idle is too low (below 750rpm), it is likely to stall on idle. You should also check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and associated black rubber hoses. Some people use carb cleaner spray to spray around the hoses and seal areas to check for leaks, because the engine will speed up if a leak is found. I rough idle can also be caused by a bad spark plug wire or fouled spark plug or even a overly rich or lean idle fuel mixture. So remove the plugs and check that the plugs are burning clean (no black soot or glazing). The plugs should be near white clean. If you find a bad plug, then follow the wire back to the coil. Verify wire is good such as testing with an ohm meter and comparing the reading to the others. A big difference would indicate a problem.

1989 Ford Festiva, keeps stalling as driving.

I had the exact same problem. The cooling fan was failing to come on and thus overheating the engine. Check the cooling fan, cooling fan thermoswitch, and cooling fan relay ( behind drivers headlight ). If you pull the connector off of the thermoswitch the fan will come on whenever the car is in "run"
