Question about 2001 Hyundai Elantra
While I turn headlight switch on, the dashboard light is supposed to turn on as well, however it does not. If I turn the switch back of and on few times, the dashboard light comes on, but is very unstable. I think this is due to bad contact in my headlight switch. How can I clean the switch contacts?
My 2003 Elantra had a problem when I would use the turn signals. The dash lights would flicker on and off and if you jiggled the arm of the dimmer switch it would turn the dash lights back on. Over time it got worse. AND little did I know it also made the tail lights and front parking lights flicker on and off!!! So it was not good to say the least.
I took the switch out and opened it up. And inside where the turn signal components moved to make their contact connections, there was a build up of electrical contact grease at the bottom making intermittent contact between two points (I'm assuming gravity and vibration over the years moved the grease down there and built up). I cleaned the excess contact grease from the area. Reassembled the switch. Put back in steering column. No longer having issues.

This is usually a loosing proposition, if the switch is failing, it is unlikely that cleaning the contacts will work long if at all. Unless you time is worth less than $10 an hour, better off to get a new switch if that's what is bad. Check for problems with a dimmer switch (if present) for dashboard lights.
