I have the same problem however, mine seems to work, or not work if you move the steering column up or down until it is just in the perfect spot. If you move and lock it just right the brake lights work. I have brand new bulbs, and fuses. It seems everytime my husband takes the 2004 expedition to get the oil changed or some kind of work done to it this happens as they can't seem to work on a vehicle unless they move the darn steering wheel to where it is comfortable for the mechanic who pulls it in and out of the garage. hmmmm Any suggestions?

    97 brake lights won't work

I had the same problem! I replaced all the bulbs and stop switch. It worked fine for a month , then the brake lights went out again. I read the other posts about the problem, adjusted the tilt wheel and voila I have brake light again. I'm sure that there is a short somewhere, but for now, without spending a fortune that I do not have to correct the wiring, I have brake lights again!!! Thanks for the suggestion!

I had the same problem with my 04 Eddie Bauer Expedition and I was told that I needed a sensor. The dealer installed it and now it works. This is just one small problem of the many I am having now.

I have the same problem and after a year of trouble shooting I have figured out that my third brake light the one on the top of the tail gate, the lens cover has a couple of cracks and water seeps in and my brake lights work, when it dries out they stop working because the water bridges the power to all the plugs.

So in order to fix this problem I ordered a new 3rd brake light from the ford dealer for about $180.00 as I was not able to find one at a junk yard or online, now my brake work. Also the new light comes with new plugs, lens cover and base so I guess it's worth it.

Check yours for a crack then uninstall it so you could see the melted plugs.

Good luck.

I assume the fuse has power if the hazards work.
The third brake light skips the turn signal switch, the regular brake light circuit goes thru the turn signal switch.
Do you have power going into the turn signal switch on the red lite green wire from the brake switch ?

Lets start at the beginning.
The turn signals and brake lights use different fuses but both go thru the turn signal switch and use the same bulbs.
Have you checked the fuses for each circuit and does each switch have power in and out ?

How to fix no brake light issue on 1999 Expedition

Have you tried wiggling the hazard light switch? The brake light switch puts 12 volts to the hazard/turn signal switch, and the switch will apply this to both taillights. If you turn on the left or right turn signal,it will only route 12 volts to the other light. If you turn on the hazard lights,it will only allow the 3rd brake to come on due to the brake switch.Often.the hazard light/brake light contacts get corroded due to not being turned on and off regularly.Have someone watch the taillights(or use a mirror) to see if they come on when you wiggle the hazard switch. If it does, turn the hazard light switch on and of repeatedly to clean the contacts.

Brake lights do not work, however the turn signals and hazards work, what can be the problem?

More than likely your brake light switch has gone bad. Luckily this is a relatively cheap and easy fix. It is located on the brake pedal and should only take you about 15 to replace. Thanks for using FixYa!

No turn signals or brake lights on left and right but brake light on top

I agree. My brake light dont work. Only the third brake light does. The running lights work but when i apply the brakes the rear tails dont light up.
I currently have this issue along with the signals dont work unless I bang the top of the steering colum. The hazard switch doesnt work either. If the signals dont work it makes this very quick clicking sound on the passenger side. I checked the fuses and they are good. The bulbs still work. The brake switch works cause the third brake light goes on. And seeing as I am having a problem with signals.....GM says I have to replace the switch in the steerg colume. Its a little box about the size of a cigarette pack. If you take apart the panels off ( right behind the steering wheel, where the hazard switch is) ...that is where it is located. Its plugged into the signal lever. Hope this helpa....Good luck everyone with this issue.
