I cannot get the button on the gear shift to push in when I want to take the car out of park. '97 Ford Escort (automatic), Any ideas of what it could be and approximate cost to fix something like this?
Try pushing a screw driver into the hole, while breaking and pressing the shift realease button.
. There is a security feature where you have to push on the brake pedal to release the gear shift which is on the floor. I think it is due to the extremely cold weather. I can shift it into gear by pushing the button located in a hole to the right of the gear stick by using a pen or screwdriver.
Dear sir/madam,
There is a small plug in the console forward of the shifter. Pop that
out and insert a thin screw driver, you'll feel a springy resistance.
Push it down and see if you can move the shifter. If the shifter will
still not move, with the car on level ground, the parking brake full
on, and the wheels blocked remove the shift cable from the tranny and
see if you can shift the tranny with the lever. If you can, your cable
is frozen. If you can't, you're looking at tranny repair.
thanks
good luck
You need to have someone or two to push the car to get the pressure off. If you are facing downhill have them push the front end, if uphill push the back. Release parking brake first because that will keep it from moving. After pushing a few inches you should be released and can shift but be carefull you don't run anyone over (go for neutral with foot on brake) Hope this helps.
If so, the rod that unlocks the quadrant
underneath the plastic is messed up. If this is the type of car that
you have to step on the brake before you can shift out of park, then
the switch at the top of the brake pedal is probably bad and it is not
telling the electric solenoid at the base of the shifter to unlock.
There is usually a slot next to the shift lever that lets you either
stick a key in there or push a button to manually over-ride the lock
mechanism. If it's column shift and the key won't turn, it could be
that you need to try to move the steering wheel back and forth to be
able to open the key and then take it out of park. Hope this works...
