Question about 1995 Volvo 960

Volvo 960 24v 3ltr auto estate

I have only just bought this car for a great price. It has only just passed it's MOT. The rear end of the car however is very low. I have jacked the rear end up and every thing looks OK. The shock are fine and not leaking.

Is there springs and if so how easy to change???? Do you think it would be expensive to buy the parts???

Your help would be great....

    Similar situation with my 'new' seconhand 960 (1995) - from what I can gather - if the car has self-leveller shocks (Nivomats) fitted to the rear, the rear of the car can 'sag' after being stood for a while (not sure how long a 'while' is…), but should rise to the correct ride hight after about 100 metres of driving… (I've got a leak in one of them and was trying to scource a replacement when I found your message) - check which shocks you have on, if they're Self-levellers, try the 100 metre test - if not, replace 'like with like'

I have had the same symptom on my 1994' 960 (sedan).

I thought (told by the dealer) the shocks had worn out (although the car was only 110000 km !...), so I had the dealer change them (they had a promotion). It did not change much of anything, except it lifts a little bit more (about 1 cm more), but still "sags" after about 1/2 hour.
It takes about 1 km driving to pump back up.

I have never been observing that symptom on nivomat-equipped 940 wagons with solid rear axles, and knowing that 960 sedans (with multilink rear suspension) having nivomat wider (3.5") than rear solid axle wagons (940 and early 960) which are 2.5".

So, my interpretation is those wider ones support a great deal of the weight, even more that of 940 wagons, so they react differently by sagging more, due to internal micro-leaks.
Also, and consistently, springs with nivomats are thinner and they may also wear out faster than on standard supension, putting even more load on nivomats to compensate.

Therefore my conclusion was :
- It is not because of the shocks,
- It may be the springs
- It is not really a problem, is it ?

Exactly the same problem on a Volvo v50 54reg t5 auto! I'm sorry that this is a useless answer because we've had this car since April 2013 and got it from a dealer in or near whittlesey and still found no solution. Its coming up to an MOT soon so fingers crossed. I think its possible that we have the same car. Ours is grey and was registered in December 2004. Reply if you find an answer. Our dealer in whittlesey and he said nothing of the fault so it would be interesting if he lied.

Recently bought peugeot 306 hatchback, S reg. it passed M.O.T 13th Sept but yesterday broke down on Motorway, loss of acceleration and felt like pulsating/shuddering, the handbrake clicks 9 times before...

you have bought as pig in a poke ,yes 3 clicks is right on handbrake ,but its easy to do just remove the rear drums and adjust brakes manually,half hours work thats all ,but it would still pass mot because its on the rolling road brake tester and both rear brakes were within 25%,But as for it breaking down i cannot say without my dirty oil encrusted fingers playing with its vitals .but if your passing alicante spain i will have a look for you

I think the big end bearings are chattering at 3000rpm

Sounds like it could be the rear end differential.

Auto g/box broken


Am afraid that it is so. To my knowledge, most 2000 Volvo S40 are front wheel drive while a number are all wheel drive. Either of which would have a serious transmission problem when towed by the rear end up.


Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
