If it stays "down" as in completely not getting any tempature at all? Not even too 100 degrees Farenheit,? Then more than likely its just the sending unit. Using alldata.com I found the location of the sensor:

On your 1997 Ford Escort (2.0L SFI SOHC), the Coolant Temperature Sensor is located: Temp guage not working - clearpixel.gif Under hood, driver side, upper engine area, below valve cover, mounted in cylinder head

When ordering the part be sure that if they do ask, which they shouldn't tell them you need the one that controls the gauge not the ECM, alldata.com shows your car only using one sensor for both.

Obviously check the wiring terminals that go to this sensor before ordering pull the plug out and check for corrison or broken wiring in the harness its self.

Let me know if I can farther assist you with your problem, thank you for using fixya.com

The gauge will likely outlast the rest of the car but the senders are often defective as is the oil pressure sender for the dashboard idiot light. Some temperature senders are located on the engine block, others may be on the radiator at the bottom tank. If the car has an electric cooling fan for engine coolant, it will have its own sender that is a switch instead of a variable element.  Some have two wires, others use chassis ground through the case of the screwed-in sender and have only a single lead. The meter movement used in gauges in general are pretty rugged and it is almost impossible to make them so poorly that they fail early. I highly recommend that everyone spring for the ~$20-$30 US for an aftermarket service manual from Haynes or Chilton for their vehicles as these can often clear up problems such as yours even if you are not a mechanic or DIYer.

Why does my audi tt temp. gauge go hotter than engine temp. fans work changed thermosat , temp sensor ,and water is ok ?

Hi
i suppose i have to ask how it is that you know these temperatures are different?
is the car actually overheating?
Have you had it scanned for any fault codes?
You may have a defective temp guage...check it by removing the sender plug and see if the guage falls totally to zero...earth the guage wire and see if the guage goes to max.

1994 3.5 Concorde...engine fans stay on. Not overheating temp guage is only on 1/4 line.

Unplugging the sensors can make the fan run.
When the computer fails to get a signal from the sensors, it turns the fan on as a default step to keep the engine from overheating.
Its also possible the relay was stuck on.

Temp guage not working prpert. Stays on H even with car off.

You might want to chk. the connection on the sending unit and temp. sensor thats the way they act when they loose a connection. If that chk. out ok then it would have to be the guage its self thats faulty.

I have a 2004 Chev Impala and the temp guage went way past any numbers and wasn't hot. The speedo also stayed at 30 mph went the car is stopped. The speedo started working again when I shut it off and...

if you remove wire connection from temp sender unit and guage goes down then reconnect it goes up ? it is probably the temp sender unit is fault this is if you are certain engine/coolant system is ok and no indication of o/heating ?

The temperature sensor is located in front of the radiator on the passenger side. Replacements cost approx $25.00.
