Question about 2002 Volkswagen Passat
Question: I am looking at purchasing a pre-owned 2002 VW Passat GLS V6. I have read in multiple places that Passats require "Premium" unleaded fuel. Can you provide some guidance as to whether Premium is truly a requirement or just a recommendation. What are the benefits of Premium and/or the potential issues of not using premium type.
Thanks for your help
If the engine requires Prem fuel I would use it, the problems of not using it are possible piston damage. decreased power and lower fuel economy, when regular is used the knock sensor pulls the timing back to reduce knocking, this i where the lower MPG comes in and power problems, if knock can not be eliminated then the pistons may be damaged. I have a Corvette that uses Prem fuel, if I run regular I loose 3 MPG, so the trade for lower cost fuel is cancelled out by the loss of MPG.
