It sounds to me like the bands are bad in your transmission. Some people does rebuild transmissions. I am not sure where you are located, but I am sure if you ask a local garage, they may be able to point you in the right direction. To answer the problem. The bands are bad and they need replaced or else you will have to purchase a new transmission. Hope I helped...

Why won't my Xterra go into reverse when the transmission is warm?

Sounds like the pump or torque converter might be bad and it isnt pumping the correct pressure!

Changed the transmission fluid on my automatic, not vehicle wont go into reverse.

Are you sure you put the correct amount in? Sounds like when it's cold the fluid settles on the bottom. But when it warms up, the fluid starts to travel and not be enough to lube and cool the gears. Check you owners manual or compare what you took out with the amount you put in.

Won't shift when cold

With the car warmed up and running, check the transmission fluid level. It may be low or needs flushed.

I have a 1993 mercury grand marquis and reverse doesn't work after it warms up. It does work when cold.

You can check with a local transmission shop, but usually the problem is a worn band or a weak pump. The reverse band also affects low gear.
There may also be a solenoid involved.

Goes in reverse when cold. but not when warm.

probably bad reverse clutch's in transmission. When vicosity of Trans fluid thins out by heat the less friction you will have in clutch assembly in transmission thus loss of gears..... Might also want to simply check fluid level in transmission when warm and running to make sure there is adequate amount in it.
