Question about 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

How do I replace the lights in the steering controls of 2006 Chevy Avalanche?

I notice you asked the same question. Did you find out how? I don't want to break anything trying to get to them but I have to believe that this is something fairly simple? Can you help me? Thank you very much. Rob Jones

I have a 2006 Chevrolet Avalance that has the radio/information center buttons built into the steering wheel. A few of the lights for these have burned out. M local dealer had replaced a couple before and it did not take long so I want to see if I can do this myself. I was told that these switches can be "popped" off to get to the lights. What is the correct way to replace these bulbs? Please provide detail if you can, as I don't want to break anything. Thank you.

Taking it to the technician is much better .still if you yourself want to try ,you will the tools such as screw driver for removing the screws.a multimeter to check the voltage of the wires.and a soldering iron to connect the wires firmly.if you have these tools and know how to use them you can do it your self.it will not take much time. but the plastic parts are very delicate to be removed and should be refitted properly to avoid further problem.

feel free for further queries.
thanks.

If it is the buttons that are integrated into the steering wheel, then you need either a new steering wheel or the button clusters, If you have some experience with a soldering iron, you could try an electronics supply for some 12/14VDC bulbs that are appx size of the ones inside the clusters (have to pop a part).
To replace the steering wheel lamps pry out the switches using a .020 feeler gage.
Dig deep the switch assembly is about one inch deep do not try to just remove the switch cover.
When out turn switch over and push in on the tab to remove the connector.
Pry switch apart from the bottom side. Inside you will see a blue horizontal mounted lamp. The lamp is called a grain of wheat lamp and can be had from a miniature lamp vendor found on line. The blue lamp covering falls apart if you decide to reuse it.
The small 12 volt lamps usually have a life of 200 hours if you are Lucky.
I highly recommend prying out all the steering wheel switches and replacing the lamps with 12 volt green LED's. You will need 7 LED's on the Limited Buick for all the switches.
Mount the LED's vertically so the light is directed to the letters on the switch, hight is not a problem.
You should test the circuit to see where the plus and minis is for soldering in the LED on the switch circuit board. I plug the switch circuit board back into the steering wheel connector and put a mark on the circuit board for the plus using a volt meter. Then went and soldered the LED in place.
The LED's work a little brighter then the old lamps. The LED's adjust nicely with the dimmer switch and should last many times over the life of the car.

use a small flat screwdriver and pry slowly the sides of the switch to unlock the plastic clip. be very careful, the plastics are brittle. then replace the bulb.

    tnx again.

Hi Guru/Master, I have a 2006 Dodge Stratus SXT, 2.4L Engine. It has AIRBAG light on, and horn doesn't work. I guess it is the clock spring needs to be replaced. I couldn't find the part/model...

I don't believe this part is available aftermarket. I recently was looking for the same part on an 01, and could only find it at the dealer. It was right around 135 dollars. Have your vin number handy when you call them, they will probably ask you for it.

I have steering wheel mounted controls that have burned out, and wanted to know where I could buy replacements.

without more detail, are we talking audio/cruise control/and the like .
On the back side of the steering wheel there are metal rings that the switch wires are connected to, they make contact to spring loaded pins.
that way the wheel can go around and around .
some times its as simple as cleaning those contacts.
if all the switches went out at the same time i would check the wire terminal plugs at the bottom of the steering column.
your local chevy dealer can help you out on parts.
or if your trying to economize try a local or on-line automotive recycling yard.
hope this gets you going

Chevy steering wheel controls

You first have to disarm and remove the air bag (unscrews with bolts from behind the steering wheel) and then you will see the screws for the switches. Only the silverado awitches will work.
