these are designed to be placed were they are so it will only pick up a knock from the engine and not other things bolted to the engine. just replace the knock sensor were it was designed to work best.
unless your xterra is supercharged, you really do not need to replace it. its a lot of work, because its located way down under the upper plenum and lower intake. its way down there. if it is supercharged, you do need to replace it, because it puts the supercharger into fail safe mode and truck till not run to its full potencial.
I just replaced this on 02 xterra 3.3 L V6. The knock sensor is in the center of the engine block below the lower intake manifold. Its a lot of work but it wasnt too hard just took time. Getting some of the hoses off in rear of motor was hardest part. But you need to remove upper and lower intake manifold and you will see it.
Your knock sensor bolts into the side of the cyclinder head opposite side of your oil cap. It has a banjo type fitting, where it has an open center where the bolt threads through and it will have a electrical connection "pig tail" coming off the sensor and running back to the engine harness. Hope that helps.
V6 3.3L The sensor is located underneath the air intake manifold on top
of the engine block. This should take an experienced mechanic about 3-4
hours to replace.

Hope this help (remember rated this free help) Good luck.
It's the valley of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's about an $800 job because the top of the engine has to come off. However, unless you have a supercharged xterra it shouldn't effect performance. Also, the knock sensor will not trip the check engine light, as it does not indicate a primary problem, so if your light is on you should have another code that should be fixed first.
