Guys, Audi A4. Drivers door won't lock with the central locking, electric windows won't work, alarm & immob. won't set. Interior light on all the time (the car thinks the door is open). I had my car scanned & fault code J386 Door control unit drivers side came up. Where abouts is this, I only ask as the manual states the control unit is under the passenger seat & is the ECU (convienience unit) & doesn't mention a control unit within the drivers door. Any suggestions, can a secondhand unit be bought & used? 7 how difficult a job is this?

will your passenger door open with the key and is it just one side that your windows are not working or both. if its just one side it might be your regulator motor in the door thats not working if its both it might be your central locking pump usually in the boot. however if both of them are working fine it could be that your key needs reprogrammed however i think the 1st 2 are more likely to be the problem.
I've been dealing with similar problems (windows and sunroof dead, power locks iffy, dome light doesn't work, random chiming) and best I can figure is:
a) get rid of the leak and any standing water b) depending on the year of your car check the relays and/or central locking module
I spent a lot of time checking the ECU and door interior parts and those were both dead ends. I also thought the standing water on the floor might be shorting actual wiring, but now I've eliminated that as well. Although my alarm hasn't been going off, the "door chime" has and the instrument cluster sometimes shows 3 or 4 doors open while driving. VAG-COM showed some alarm trip type faults as well. Central locking is my next move when I've got some time.
I had the same problem with my 2002 2.5 tdi, i spent weeks looking for the fault an found it to be 2 broken wires inside the drivers door rubber wiring loom ( near door hindges ). it was causing same fault no int/light - no central locking to drivers door - no electric windows. i managed to repair wires and it now fine..
